I got thinking the other day about how much gear I actually have, and I realised that I have 1000+ worth of stuff I don't even use (or at least, haven't used in the last 6 months), and while I have good guitars, amps etc, I certainly don't have anything amazing. I'm thinking about selling a load of pedals, some guitars and maybe an amp etc this summer in order to buy just one really good guitar. I think maybe a gibson es-339 or an american telecaster. Has anyone else had this moment of epiphany, sold lots of gear and replaced it with just one thing?

p.s. I'm obviously going to keep my Boss DM-2, CE-2, TR-2 etc, but I might part company with a few boss pedals like my DS-1, CS-3 etc...

I have tons of stuff i never use and the pile keeps getting bigger, last week i bought a jcm900 combo, an Ibanez RG550, a Boss ME-50, a 60's Hondo, a 60's Kinor SG, a Boss DS-1 and a rocktek flanger and out of this the JCM and DS-1 i fiddle around with, the rest remains on top of the pile.. and that was just this week's junk

I look at the pile of kit and shudder...I must service and satisfy my GAS or she will surely punish me and bring me much pain

It's all about choice for me - I know I can't use it all the time but it's good to have the choice of guitars, amps, effects, etc - life's too short to miss out on all that fun

Ollie - when I decide what I'm selling you'll be the first to know!

All good points though, I do appreciate having the option to use my other gear but the thing is, I rarely do. I tell myself I'll put other guitars in a different tuning and so on and it's fun for a little while but I still find myself playing the same (better) instruments. I think I'd rather have something that I'd love and never want to replace because it's the exact one I want rather than have a big pile of compromises. A bad workman blames his tools but at the end of the day, all things being equal, a fender strat will sound and feel better than a squier affinity strat.

I'd rather have the choice of a few instruments and pedals that suit me and I enjoy playing rather than boxes of things that I don't. Of course, ideally I'd like to have the choice of dozens of mint vintage instruments, amps and pedals but that isn't going to happen just yet

I spend money I don't have and don't make on gear that rarely, if ever, gets played. It's a shame, but it's a passion, so what can we do??

I've been on a mission to get all the Boss dirt pedals. (with the exception of the metal ones) I wanted a chance to hear them, enjoy them, and keep the ones I liked. It's always been my intention to trade/sell the others that don't make the cut, to allow someone else to enjoy them.
Not quite the same as what you are on about I know, but similar. I do know that there will be a few pedals, that in years to come I'll think 'I wish I'd never let that one go'. For example, I'm really not feeling my OD-2r. I do however feel, that if I let it go, I'll regret it.
So in summary, you should let someone else enjoy the pedals you don't use, especially if it means you can aquire something you will use. Just be sure of the ones you are willing to let go...

I appreciate exactly what you mean DasBeef, I tell myself that considering I can sell most new guitar pedals etc for 95% of what I pay for them (or even a profit if i get them second hand) then I should just buy them and sell them on if they don't do much for me. The problem is i never get round to selling them! I don't think I'll sell anything hard to get hold of again. Just things that are readily available I suppose. Plus I'd like to think someone who would appreciate it more would use it.

I'm thinking of putting some pedals up for sale, but the only ones I feel 100% on getting rid of are my BOSS NF-1, mainly because I don't use it...Also, a Pignose Detonator pedal, once again, because I don't use it...Once I get around to putting these on eBay, I'll mention it on the eBay forum.

It is great to have a lot of gear, it is even better to realise that you can only play one instrument at a time, that is takes time to get to grips with all your gear.

Once you do have quite a lot it may be an idea not to buy for quite some time and just play and see how you can use it and how much you enjoy it.

I think the buying more and more is a habit and it may be hard to get out of. For some of us money may be an issue, others may have to tell themselves to stop buying.

On the other hand there are folks who just collect and do not play, in fact can not play that well at all.

To learn to play takes a long time, to get better takes a lifetime, and to become truelley original takes a lifetime.

We all have different goals and each of us are their own master, so decide for yourself which route your are travelling on.

Enjoy the journey!!

The thing I find fascinating is with a bunch of pedals in the collection, which ones "drfit to the bottom" - what are the ones that never seem to leave my pedalboard no matter what gets changed around.

I'm beggining to buy compact pedals and really regret buying a zoom multieffect 7 years ago. Still, I can't get rid of it for all I've recorded and played through it... When I'm finished buying the 'basic' pedals and a decent amp for gigs I'll go and buy an Epiphone LP or something like that... But I don't think I will be able to give my old Sonora Strat to anyone.

I hope I can end up buying something you want to sell!

Yep, feel the same way, selling off a bunch of unused pedals, keep the ones I like and actually play as well.
