I, StratoSphere, am officially the stupidest being to ever touch a soldering iron.

i decided to tackle the tedious job of disconnecting all the wires from the PCB of my BF-2. i did this to get a closer look at the wires on the pots and such inside. upon closer inspection, everything looked fine and i decided it was time to resolder the board back on. 2:30 AM everything is back where it should be and i go to put the backplate back on, but for some reason, the board wont fit back into the pedal. What is going on i asked myself. then i realized what happned. i somehow managed to solder all 18 wires onto the UPSIDE DOWN PCB. yes thats right, the PCB was upside down. you think i would have noticed that i am soldering on the side that all of the components are on. NOPE! or that im sticking the wires through on the green side with all the solder. NOPE! i cant even flip the board to close the unit as there isnt enough slack in the wires.

in conclusion, i am unplugging the iron and going to bed

Maybe it's the fumes from the soldering iron

Well, those things happen.

We've all make stupid mistakes like that. Even pros have been beginners one day, and everyone who has a certain skill in handling a soldering iron could tell some stupid history like this.

How many times have I soldered a jack and forgot to thread the jack's outer cover on to the lead before soldering the plug on. I think that must be a very common mistake to make.

Bossarea : yep, I did this one quite a number of time...

Stratosphere : yep, just rest a little, and go on it again with fresh mind.

I often let opened pedals some days, or even weeks or months, and work on it again jsut when I feel like it.

Don't feel bad, these things happen. Someone at one of the DIY-Builder sites I go do did a whole build with the PCB upside down. Set it aside for a bit, get a desolder braid, desolder pump, or desoldering iron, then have at it again. Everyone hates to make mistakes, but if you can at least learn something from it, at least you got something out of it. Look at it this way, its giving you plenty of soldering practice for the next mod or build, and luckily the pedal is sort of dead or comatose anyways, so its not like you screwed something up that was perfect working condition. And maybe you need to blame dyslexia...lol. Just kidding dude

StratoSphere
<< resolder the board back on. 2:30 AM >>

Therein lies your problem dude,
did you ever consider that fact that you may have created the ultimate MOD...

BF-2 StratoSonicBlaster Mod?

No components necessary, just send $49.99US to .........
you might become really rich StratoSphere

Lighten up on yourself, going off & doing other things for a while, was probably the best thing you could do for yourself.

I worked with a guy, who designed an entire prototype PCB, upside down
We had hundreds of them etched - so to save money & face he ended up building them upside down,
- Yes!! he even bent the IC pins back on themselves , so that they would fit correctly into the board,
Believe it or not they all worked ...

Luckily Dr. Bob, your part of your name is spelled the same backwards or forwards...

Hi jack

Not only can my name be spelled backwards;
It's Palindromic as well...

There's a subtle joke in there somewhere.

Just curious...

Does it sound any different?

i took out all the components and painted up the empty chassis and wired it up for a tap tempo box. i kept some of the insides for parts, and gave away the others.

man i still cant believe i actually soldered it on backwards. im going with the fumes made me dizzy.

i blame lack of sleep for my last goof-up
ripped my guitar apart last night to add some caps and rewire it for something like 107 combos...how did that happen?
got near teh very end and discovered i was short two caps
so it sits on my kitchen counter waiting for the radio scrap to open

and... i still have a wah pedal i still have to trouble shoot from modding it a few months ago...scratchy sound that only shows up in certain position/guitar/pedal setup/alignment of the stars...

My best (worst) soldering iron story: I was in a motel room with three other band members, all of whom were asleep. It was about 3am when I decided to fix my wire-frame sunglasses. They had broken at the nose bridge, and Arizona is BRIGHT in the summer, and I'm too stoopid to just buy cheap replacements to get me by. Having no kind of vice to hold the glasses, I put the iron in the stand backwards so I could hold the sunglasses together and guide the solder into place as I worked. They turned out great! I put them on and admired my work in the mirror. Then I grabbed the soldering iron out of the stand to unplug it...by the hot end sticking out!!! I think I woke up the entire Motel 6! When I shrieked, all of my bandmates shot out of thier beds and ran into each other in their frantic attempts to get away from whatever it was they thought was trying to kill them in thier sleep. I plunged my hand into the ice-filled cooler while the iron burned a hole in the carpet, filled the room with smoke and set off the smoke alarm. It was my right hand, and being the guitarist it was really hard to grip a pick for the rest of that tour. Awesome scar for a couple years!
