Nice article! Tone has been my goal in all my playing life, much more than technique and fast playing. If one finds the right tone that is the only tone needed to create a great solo, listen for Peter Greens sustained note in The supernatural with Johnn Mayalls Blues Breakers, this note builds the drama of the whole song. As a part of my tone-search I own/owned lots and lots of overdrives, but few of all other effects. To get tone from vintage equipment is an expensive way to go, sadly.

Hi Witloofboer & guys What a great article & read.
I have taken (3) snippets out of Eric's article, which I belive sum up the search for "THE TONE"
quote:
Eric Kraft http://www.analogman.com/kraft2.htm
It is obvious that "THE" tone is a purely subjective animal.
Fabulous tone. So what's the answer? I told you when I started this article there wasn't one, but take heart. There are many! You just have to find yours.
There are many answers to finding " THE " tone.
Recently I found a small combo that has become the center point when I gear up & play at home (I've purposely elected to withhold the name, as the brand is generally considered crap)
This little amp, has really made me rethink the growing collection of gear that seems to FIND it's way to my place. And it takes pedals really well.
So for the past few months, I've been very happy with my tone. (Well! at least until the Next amp comes along)
I read many fabulous stories here from many members here, like Franzoni's recent & long search for his Wet Dry Wet rig.
Good luck with the quest for yours. Regards Dr. Bob |

Interesting nonetheless. Especially the part about the Casio synth guitar. I read about those in "The ultimate guitar book" by Tony Bacon.

I suspect what amp youre talking about so why not let us all know it, its cost like US$ 80, and Im really tempered to buy one just to check Dr Bobs tastes Cheap isnt always bad, Bad Monkey, the new Danelectro Cool Cats to name a few. Its a really good feeling buying something cheap and then make good use of it. Anybody can buy some Custom Shop Fender amp and get a good tone, but to find a new good amp cheap is much more difficult. So Dr Bob tell us your secret love affair |

I don't care about the name. Only last week, I recorded something funky. Someone said: 'Hey, that guitar sounds great!' It was just a Squier Stratocaster, recorded directly in the computer. It doesn't sound cheap/flat/... It just sounds right & it plays well. What do you want more?

Hi Guys
Seriously! If I told you, you would flame me for a week. And stone me to death, with all your old busted Boss pedals.
I PM-ed a few people about it, I belive Goran was one of those people. I specially pic Goran, as I know he has an affinity for small combo amps. And he modded his Epi. Valve Jr. literally to death.
I am going to do a bit of study into why this amp sounds so good. I suspect it's the soft recovery mode on the power amp.
I've done a little it of test recording with it. I' have had some very pro, gig every day muso's come over, to play & listen to it, & the over all general comments are an astonishing & surprising, - WTF? - All that? - From that little thing? Actually (POS).
Regards Dr. Bob

You never ever get framed here, Dr Bob, even if you tell us that you use mini-mini Marshall (the battery powered plastic thing). And for the moment a lot of Boss fanatics is wondering what the hell it is, maybe have problems with sleep or family relations, because they really want to know |
