- if you ever get a chance to see some incredible musicianship, go see someone who plays the Chapman stick. - it's basically a bass guitar and regular guitar in one unit, fischman electronics and is played by hammering on for basslines and hammring on with your picking hand for lead chording etc; they are configured in 10 12 or more strings and handmade in California, you can't really play it by picking it - its a tapper's heaven - see a good player at this and you will grin from ear to ear. http://www.stick.com/

| I tried it once, it's a crazy instrument, but i wouldn't try to pick it, pick-ups are highly sensitives, actually, first time i tried to pick it (because i didn't know i had to hammer on it), and i almost crush the amp and immediatly understood i had to tap it, so take care |

Tony Levin in the 80's incarnation of King Crimson was where I first came across a Stick Combined with Belew & Fripps manic poly ryhthms and Brufords time signatures it is superb.
Here's the classic Elephant Talk... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76eoyyem2K8 And Adrian Belew certainly uses a lot of tricks up his sleeve on this version too.
Oh, and 20+ years laters it's still damn hard to work out who is actually playing what parts in their stuff.
