I picked up a cheap DD-3 last week (Version 2B - $30) that had an intermittent switch. Switch fix was easy.
But it looked like it had been used for carving practice... Unfortunately I don't have any "before" pics, but it was the worst condition pedal I've ever bought. Heaps of nicks and scratches, plus a previous owner had scratched about 20 "X"s into the paintwork through to the metal (and gouged the metal in some places) - I'm guessing to identify it if it was ever stolen (or maybe they were just signing their name ).
I thought I might just leave it but with the price I paid I decided to do an experiment.
1) First I sanded back the base with 600 grit waterproof sandpaper (under a running tap/faucet). That got rid of all the physical scratches etc.
2) I painted the base with some "satin" white paint I had laying around. Didn't look very good - the "pearl" colour on the foot-pedal clashed badly with the white.
3) I went to the local car parts place (Canadian Tire for those of you who know it) and bought the closest touch-up paint I could find - "Nissan Champagne". Cleaned off the satin white and resprayed with the touch-up paint. The results can be seen below... It's not a perfect match, but it's pretty darn close and a HEAP better than the crap condition it was in.
Finish seems very durable - whacked it a couple of times reassembling the pedal and it is fine.
Really nice. Is there any non destructive way of getting the control panel off of compact pedals?
Not sure what you mean by "control panel"? If you mean the black rectangle with the knobs and LED inset, just pull off the knobs, undo the pot nuts and it will come right off.
I always take the base off the pedal and swing the board out so I can hold the back of the pots when I'm doing them back up. Some of the older pedals need a bit of care with the positioning of the pots so the lugs don't short on anything.
Did I see another post where you think you have found the problem with the DD-2 ??? I can't bring myself to poke around in mine yet the get the readings...
