How do I get a low-end boost in my sound? I need to
get a good/beefy metal sound (Lamb of God, The
Haunted, Nevermore, Testament) but my amp (Peavey
Transtube head through 5150 cab) doesn't have enough
low-end. I'd like to keep my Rocktron Silver Dragon or a Boss
MT2 for distortion, but I just need to add something else to beef up my tone. To me, it seems my distortion is a bit thin with either pedals. What effect could I add to boost the bass? I've tried the
Boss GE-7 EQ but that didn't seem to help my problem. I'd
appreciate any suggestions.

what note do you tune your guitar to? for example, if you tune down to B, it might be that the speakers in your cab simply can't produce a fundamental note that low. a frequency response curve for the speakers in your cab might also help determine if this is your problem.

if your guitar tone is too 'thin', then your guitar's pickups might be the problem. generally you'd want to use a humbucking pickup for that kind of sound, but not necessarily an extremely high output pickup. a lower-output pickup (closer to a PAF copy) will give you better note articulation and a fuller sound if you tune your guitar lower than standard tuning. for example, the Duncan JB sounds great to my ears in standard tuning, but not when tuned down to D (all strings tuned down one whole step), even when using heavier strings.

another possibility is to simply crank your amplifier's master volume, since louder also means more (perceived) bass.

good luck!

Thicker strings, GE-7, PQ-4, or PW-2 pedals, use rhythm (or neck) pickup instead of bridge.. there's a million different ways.

im positive that the power amp setting will make you sound huge. crank the master volume and turn your channel volume up to the desired level. with your master volume cranked, you should only have to turn up the channel volume up to 1 or 2 depending on your amp. then adjust your amps bass, treble, etc accordingly.

what have you tried so far, warlokk?

Haven't tried anything yet as my rig is at my drummer's place... but I'm planning on adding a CS3 before distortion and adding the EH2 after to see what they do for me... I'm gonna skip the EQ 'cos I've tried it in the past with little luck. Strato, I am however lookin forward to tryin ur power amp setting. Does cranking the Master Volume create extra noise? Thanks guys for all the suggestions.

no theres not really any extra noise. i cant explain how much of a difference this power amp setting makes in your sound. i remember the first time i did it. it was like "THAT IS THE SOUND IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR!" and it was on a little 10 watt Marshall and it sounded massive. however if there is noise i suggest picking up a NS-2. it should kill all the noise plus it doubles as a power source

Is your guitar humbucker equipped?
Where in your signal chain are you putting the EQ?

I have an EMG81 (active humbucker) at the bridge. I don't use the neck pickup. In the past, I tried the GE7 last in the chain.

strange... well I've heard that those EMGs have too much high end.. well try putting the GE-7 on the FX Loop of your amp... that's the only thing I can think about... for me the GE-7 last on the chain would work perfectly, I have a similar setup to you, a Supreme Transtube Head and a 2x12" with Eminence Legends... and I have adecuate bass response to my taste... I never need to add more bass, it's more than enough..
