OK i've only just arrived so this may have been answered somewhere but i couldn't see it on the site.
How come Boss number some pedals as 2 (like BF-2, DF-2) when there was no '1' version? There was a TW-1, so i suppose the AW-2 was seen as a replacement. It seems to be random - is there any pattern i'm not seeing (in a Da Vinci Code kind of way)?
i know they never use the number '4' because it's the equivalent to '13' in Japanese culture.
Is this a geeky enough question?  |

They don't use the 1 'cause people will think it's an older model so they start every new model with a 2. About the 4 you're right but there's the fabulous sought after PQ-4.
And there was a BF-1 too

Just go with the flow, it's all set by the marketing divisions of the companies.
Want to be even more confuse?
Go and try to figure out the model numbers on Digitch multi-effects.
The Boss GT-5 has way less patches & functions than the GT-3
and here in Oz, it's more sought after..

The Boss 2 series are a delight, and they still come out with new models: RC-2.
The Two series are really the pioneers, do not be put off by number Thee, Five and Six, as they may have more to offer for you, but really all you need is a number two pedal!!
Okay just a bit of fun, but then there is some truth in this as well, just check it out for yourself. |

Actually you may be right. i got the CS-2 over the CS-3 because i heard the CS-3 wasn't as good for some reason. In fact of my 13 pedals only my TW-1, ODB-3 (where was the ODB-2?) and NF-1 aren't 2s. |

The ODB-3 is called three (so are the LMB-3, CEB-3 etc.) while they're the succeeders of the bass serie with a 2, CE-2B, LM-2B etc. |
