OK - Lots to answer there Dr Bob...
Firstly, the rendered diagram is:
http://gaussmarkov.net/wordpress/thoughts/wiring-up-a-1590b/
(ANOTHER awesome resource) I wanted to reference it (like i did with beavis), but couldn't remember where it came from: I looked at so many pages when building this thing, they all blurred into one.. Trawled through my search histroy and found it.
The pedal definitely does NOT clean up with volume roll-off - As the guitar is almost all off, you get a cool gated "velcro fuzz" sound, but definitely not clean.
The guitar was a bridge-humbucker equipped USA Fender Tele: Swapped between middle and bridge for different parts.
And thanks for the complements, but it's actually my brother-in-law playing - He is an absurdly talented ACOUSTIC guitarist called Jon Gomm - Check him out on youtube and at www.jongomm.com. |

Just finished this MXR Distortion + clone circuit: Sounds pretty good, just have to box it up.

Nice job! Did you use 1N270 Ge diodes? |

No, I had a bit of difficulty getting hold of them, so the ones you see are Ge 1N34s (I've read elsewhere they are suitable alternatives). It sounds pretty good, but I don't have an original D+ to compare it to, so who knows?
I'm tempted to make another D+ clone and use it as a test-bed for some other clipping options, like LEDs, or a couple of diodes in series, maybe make it switchable between two or three options. Maybe even play about with some of the crazy clipping options suggested at AMZ:
http://www.muzique.com/lab/tclip.htm
I really like the idea of a "warp" pot to sweep between symmetrical/asymmetrical clipping, but I'm not sure if the effect would be a little subtle to be worth the effort: There are almost too many options here... We need a new accronym, the equilavent of GAS for pedal building/modding, I'm certainly starting to suffer from the syndrome.

Nice neat build !
With stripboard builds of circuits you can also reduce the risk of shorts and stray capacitance, noise etc by removing the unwanted lengths of copper track - make a cut across a point where the unwanted length of strip starts and get a sharp blade and lift the copper track - with a bit of practice the unwanted track will "peel" off with a pair of small pliers.

Hi Leeroyfunk
Nice job. Which Veroboard layout did you use, that I see on the Left hand side of your picture?
Did you use an old school 741? or did you substitute the opamp?
You will have to post some pics when it's all in a pedal case.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Ah, interesting! Funny that we've cloned the same two pedals in the same order!
Here's my own take on the MXR D+ :

It's another layout from freestompboxes.org - I've swapped R7 for a lower value to squeeze a bit more volume out of it, and yes, I used a 741.

Yeah! I chose the Fuzz because it was such a simple board, with very little off-board wiring to go wrong with that single volume knob: The MXR seemed like a good "baby-steps" increase in complexity with the opamp and two controls.
I'm quite keen to do a CE-1/Clone Theory-style chorus i've found, but I'm tempted to etch my own board for that one - A whole new level of stuff that could go wrong... |

I've recently been asked to build someone a CE-1 copy.... looks like Small Bear sell the right BBDs. |

Have you got a layout or just the schematic for the CE-1? - I was going to do the John Hollis Zombie, just looking at the CE-1 schematic scrambles my brain. |

| Schematic. I always do my own layouts. It does indeed scramble the brain, but I've built worse. |

Just finished my most successful DIY pedal build so far - Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret clone:

Apparently, it's an amalgamation of various Marshall amp gain stages recreated using jfets for valves: It certainly sounds more "amp-like" than any other overdrive pedal i've tried/owned/made. Not going to bother making any more OD/gain pedals for a while, as this suits me very well. Next build will be either a chorus, or some sort of crazed envelope filter+octave up+octave down+fuzz, deep-funk monsterbox. |

Nice Job Leeroyfunk
I've heard good things about the Dirty Little Secret clone.
I even archived the build info/data, for some future rainy day.

Go for it Dr. Bob! It's a great pedal. |
