Mines around the same vintage..i love mine as is,i've seen some people post mods for it here to up the rate for a more leslie type wobble and i have to admit i was tempted....but i already have a unit for leslie effects so now i've come to the conclusion that i wouldn't really be interested in putting a soldering iron near it unless something broke inside it...compared to my analogue CH-1 the CE-2 is streets ahead tone and effect wise....so i for me anyway i'm leaving mine stock..... |

At the approximate time of the ce-2's conception, Boss had 8-10 experts working flat out in the development team designing these pedals, its not inconceivable they spent *thousands* of dollars and many many man hours in the design of each compact.
Many people for some reason think they can do a better job in a shed with a soldering iron and some cheap componants from maplin or whatever - I don't believe a word of it though - sure there are plenty of very knowledgable people on this forum that do actually know what they are doing and what they are trying to acheive by swapping a few componants who will disagree with this
This is the reason the CE-2s today command such a high price, because so many of them have been ruined by amateurs who don't have a clue what they are doing
The later CE-2's are not the best sounding in my opinion, but they are still pretty damn good, and even the MIJ green backs can still command up to �100 over here in the UK (no joke)
My advice to you - protect your investment, leave it alone, get another pedal that suits you better. What sort of stuff do you play?
I can wholeheatedly recommend the CE-1 as they are simply amazing and totally live up to the hype; but they do weigh a ton and cost a bomb - other than that the DC-2 Dimension C is a wonderful chorus pedal too - also very expensive but what a sound........
Failing that get an older CE-2, the silver screw black label ones do sound much better ;)
Of course I will probably now get shot down by many electronics experts who say I'm talking out of my bottom - I am biased I guess as I just hate anything modified with a passion be it cars/synthesizers/guitars/pedals etc etc - I love Boss pedals and I hate the thought of another rare and collectable model being potentially ruined - It'll never be the same again after you start playing around with it....... just be very careful

Actually, I tried the Monte Allums mod on my CE-2b, and while the MA mods are usually good stuff, I was disappointed with this one.
Sure, the fast rate mod is fun for a while, but it also became a lot brighter than it used to be, like the annoying kind bright.
So, after a few weeks I restored it back to original and love it even more. |

| If you feel like modding something get a CE-3. They're going for about $30 around here, so if you mess it up there's no huge loss. The stock pedal doesn't sound as good as my black label MIJ CE-2, but I bet you could mod it to make it sound good. |

| Thanks Guys for all of your thoughts and ideas. I live in the US and only about 2 hours from Robert Keeley and I think he does a great job on Modding Boss pedals. I have the SD-1, DS-1, and MT-2 all modded by Keeley Electronics. I also have the OD-3 modded by DMB pedals. All of these pedals sounded great before I modded them, but they sounded even better with the mods especially the MT-2. So, when I read about the great things that can be done to my CE-2 I wanted to just try it, but you guys have convinced me to not mod my CE-2, but I was pretty dang close too. The sound that I like the most when using a chorus is the floating on water sound. The CE-2 does that the best. I just thought the mod would make it better. I have all the boss compact chrous' CH-1, CE-2, CE-3, CE-5 and the best is the CE-2. I like the CE-3 so what mods could I get for that pedal. I guess that I think that modding a boss pedal is worth more than one that is not moded over here in the US. I would love to compare the moded and not moded one together. |

I remember posting a question about my BF-2 before i got my CE-2... i wanted to get more of a CE-2 sound out of it rather than using it as a flanger...christo had some mods for to set me off in that direction,i'm sure keeley would defo have some idea if it were possible...might be an idea get an old BF-2 and change out some stuff to see it you can get it sounding like you want..a lot of the early Floyd/Police watery chorus stuff was actually a EH electric mistress on a chorus type setting....

have you tried turning a BF-2 of HF-2 into a watery chorus?
just keep the Manual up high, rate up high depth middle and keep the RES below 9 o'clock.
that should provide a watery chorus with somewhat of a different tone to the CE and CH models. |

I have a CE-2 that is a little bit on the fritz and I was thinking of send it to RK get the mod and the "upgrade". I thought I read that they would lookat it too if there was a problem with the pedal.
I like the idea of a mod. If you hate it, you can find another one to keep in original condition.
Some will  but it's not like a CE-2 is a fabershe egg, you can somewhat easily pick up a replacement or buy one to mod.
I had a MIJ SD-1 that did nothing for me tone wise...it just collected dust.
Sent it off to Analog Mike and it's one of my fave OD pedals. Just saying that mods are not evil even on the older MIJ pedals.
