Recently got a nos ps-2 for 50 euros so thats not too bad. When it arrived it worked fine, but when i tried it the second time I only got the dry signal, opened it up, looked inside, closed it, working fine, but...... this I have to do every single time I want to use it, that's not every day cause I play it mostly for fun but anyway.... What do you guys think it is, I can't find any loose parts or anything. |

Hi SP-1 I know it's a dumb question, but is the plastic insulator, inside, between the back of the circuit board, & the metal back plate. Sometimes I get second hand pedals, with this plastic insulator missing.
if it's ok, then look for: Dry solder joint-s, or maybe a cracked one. Wires broken off the board, or loose. Loose input-output jacks, maybe twisted a bit & active is shorting to the case. A loose pot, that has one of its 3 connections touching the metal case inside. (rotated a bit)
A long component lead, that has bent over on the solder side of the circuit board, & is touching something else intermittently.
If the pedals sometimes works, then it's a good chance, that it's something simple, like one of the above faults.
Get a magnifying glass & have a good long hard look, you will find the fault most times, just by observation. Just take your time, & have really good lighting, or best is daylight.
Also look to see if one of the components has a broken solder joint, or seems to be moving away from the PCB. Also look for a possible, but unlikely hair line crack in the circuit board, usually near the edges, or right down the middle.
Look for any sighs of mods as well, but on a PS-2, I have never heard of guys modding them at all.
Remember just take a good long look. Tell us all what you find.
Regards Dr. Bob
PS - Look for bad solder joints or cracks around the DC power sockets, these get a lot of use on a PS-2 Use the magnifying glass.

Hi SP-1 Send me some close up pictures if you have a digital camera and your not too sure about something.
Or better still, post them up,here on the forum. That way we have a lot of different people looking for-with you.
We'll see if we can help you sort it out.
Regards Dr. Bob

well I take a look inside it's a double deck board... I noticed a piece of tape, covering some solder points, was folded and was not protecting all the points wich (maybe) touched the board were the knobs are attached to, so... I try again tomorow, when it functions right away I propably solved the problem if not I take another look. |

something similar happened to me with a pedal ( i cant recall which one. im thinking BF-2). anyway, it would only work half the time and it would cut off and on so i opened it up to take a closer look. i noticed that it would only work when i pressed the board as far inside as it would go. when i let it sit regularly, i guess things were touching together, so i stuck in 4 rubber nipple things to keep the board tight, closed it up and it still works fine.
on the rare occasion where one of my Boss' malfunction, i always take off the back and wiggle stuff and lightly push and pull things while im plugged into the amp. that way i can hear what my tinkering is doing, |
