Hi I was just wondering how do I read the serial number of an old Boss CE-1? I've tried inserting it into the boss serial decoder but I don't think it reads the serial correctly. Does anyone have any ideas? thanx Saverio |

Hi yeah that's the serial number decoder I tried, but as you know, a pedal that was made from 1976 to 1979 can't be made in 1981 ( according to the serial decoder). I'm thinking of buying one of these pedals and asked the various sellers for the serial numbers, when inserting them into the decoder, the serials go way beyond manufacturing ending in 1979. That's why I'm asking if anyone knows how to decode them? thanx Saverio |

Although the Serial Number Decoder is accuarate, there are certain time periods or numbers that are not decoded correctly. So this is may be one of those numbers.
However, I think it has been discussed here before that some pedals do have serial number dates that are a bit out of sequence with Production and Sale dates from Boss, so others more familiar with certain models would be able to offer some advice as to why this might be occurring. Also, are you sure its a CE-1? As the CE-1 is not really a "compact pedal" so they may have used a different coding system for those, and I don't know how accurate the decoder is with non-compact pedals.
If none of that works out, it seems like there may also be a possibility that either the seller is confused about the pedal or trying to mislead a buyer. I'd ask for a picture of the pedal and also of the serial number. If the serial number is stamped inside, then the decoder may be incorrect with certain numbers or pedals. If the serial number is on a sticker on the inside, the sticker may have been swtiched, or if its on a backplate, there may have been a backplate switch. But then again, if none of these things happened, the decoder might be a little off on some numbers. |

Well since I 've been checking with 3 or 4 different sellers, and I've asked all of them for the serial numbers ranging from 1xxxxx to 9xxxxx, I don't think there is any fraud on serial numbers. The pedal is not a compact boss pedal but the earlier stomp box version. According to the serial decoder these serial numbers range from 1981 to 1988 which is totaly impossible because production of this model halted in 1979. There may be another method of decoding these serial numbers, and I was just wondering if anyone knows how to do it? thanx Saverio |

only thing i can think of is that Roland may have stamped a date on the board of the pedal. this is unlikely, but its worth a look |

The CE-1 used a different 6 digit system than the system used on compact pedals. I don't know how to decode these so they're not decoded properly by the SN decoder.
The 4 digit system used on compacts starts on 6400 which is rather odd. It could be because it builds on the 6 digit system so try taking the 2 first numbers in the serial and count backwards from the known scheme and see where you end up. |
