Hi Guys I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but seeing that I'm asking about Boss Equivalent Pedals, I thought I would post it here. Plus I didn't want to go off topic over on the original thread.
Simple thinking/typing out loud challenge:
Which Two BOSS Compact Pedals, sound most like the Sounds that Steve Via, was getting from his new Jemini Twin pedal, in the demo Flash video link, that "Heart and Soul: posted
http://www.ibanez.com/videos/jemini.swf http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3022&whichpage=28
Of course there is a heap of other processing going on when he plays the grit tones in the second past.
Come on Zentropa, this one's right up your alley.
Regards Dr. Bob

well...
there's something that has to be said first.
about 90% of that tone is from the amp and guitar.
the first section is VERY dependent upon the amp. there's a ton of natural vacuum tube compression in the same pentode flavor of a JCM900 or peavey ultra/5150.
the closest pedal that would probably pull that overall tone off (if going through a tube rectifier) is that melanhead DS-1 mod (based off of the SEM/Ultra). as for stock pedals, a toshiba op amp MIJ DS-1 or a DS-2 on the mode 1 selector.
the second section is a toughie. he's pushing at least 80db... probably more like 100db. i don't have a ton of experience opening up on a lot of the higher gain boss pedals, but my experiences say that none of them really will maintain that much clarity with that much gain unless you are blasting very loud.
it's easy to narrow it down to probably candidates in which pedals have that type of gain/clipping sound. the short list: MT-2, PW-2, MD-2. (pedals like the HM-2, ML-2, HM-3, etc. are easily eliminated due to voicings).
the MT-2 is the likely front runner but it requires a ton of volume in order to get that kind of individual string distinction if you are ringing a low open string. |

entirely unrelated but when they started telling each other how awesome they were I was half expecting them to start making out
Hah! But I appreciated the "Ahhh you're a wanker Vai" "yeah so they say" bit. |

Hi Zen I'm still thinking about this one, that's probably why I came up with the challenge. I have been listening to the Flash vid. a few times, but there is a lot of extra processing going on in there.
This is one of my biggest grips about pedal/processor demos, they always seem to add a bunch of other stuff to make the pedal sound cooler/better. And then the buyers(us) get all cheesed off trying to emulate similar sounds. (Maybe this is a whole other thread?)
I thought there would me more takers, but it seems to have fizzled out a bit.
I know Goran, & Visserman will have a few words to say on the subject.
Regards Dr. Bob

its a hard topic dr bob!
the demo is great but like you've all said there are alot of other things going on. i mean its going into his signature amp for starters, which inst going to sound like anything else, the whole point of an amp like it.
i'd go for a ds1 seeing that he has used one previously. there would be alot of other tweaking to be done though... |

But Steve used the DS-1 only as an overdrive, for leadboost. He also used an old Tubescreamer in a similar fashion. |

well a recent review in the german "gitarre & bass" stated that one side is like a Tube Screamer with a slight twist - modded to Mr. Vai's liking... the other side is built to be like his modded DS-1 but with even more gain.
that being said... I didn't like his tone AT ALL in this video. |

His new board can be seen here (well the previous board yet without the Jemini pedal). You can see an analogman DS-1 and a true bypass modded TS-9DX. My brother has a TS-9 and a DD-3 with Steve's autograph on it, cause he borrowed 'em once for a show here in Holland where the local Carvin dealer had to bring all the equipment, Steve just brought his guitar. Since the dealer, where we also rehearsed didn't have the requested TS-9 nor a Boss delay, he borrowed 'em from my brother. Other stuff he requested were a DS-1, a Morley bad horsie wah, a Morley little alligator volume pedal, a digitech Whammy, a Peterson strobostomp and some digital delay. The Peterson wasn't even available in Holland yet, so his guitar tech actually drove to Germany to buy one, or else Steve wouldn't play....who's the diva now huh?
We were allowed to attended the soundcheck as guests, now how cool is that? He even said "Hi".

Hi Dirk
That's a cool picture of Via setting up. Did you manage to get any more?
Thanks for sharing the pic & story.
I also see a Crybaby Wah, just under his left foot.

He comes across ok to me anyway...anyone that pokes fun at themselves must be alright....on the issue of the jemini..i see in tubescreamer in the pic and he is known for his DS-1 usage, seemingly he turned satch onto the keeley ultra modded DS-1,..i thought some of you might be interested..a mate of mine had some footage for a berklee masterclass he gave back in the late 80's and in it when asked about his gear he said he was using a boss super overdrive pedal,he also had some sort of 'superstrat' the footage was pretty grainy i think it was off an early camcorder but it was pre ibanez anyway..... |
