I have owned a couple of vintage (!) Fenders long ago and have played/tested on 20-30 more or less. They are very nice to hold and look at, but most of them arent nearly as good as guitars from Fenders Custom Shop. I have to agree with Blackmore, but the new ones arent really ten times better but generally speaking, better. And the prices are far to high for playing on them, they are for collecting/investments just like stamps or old cars. I saw a totally screwed 1962 strat last week, badly refinished, new fretboard, destroyed bridge, just an ugly piece of guitar. They wanted about $3000 for it! And a guitar like this isnt collectible, just a bad looking player.... In conclusion; if you want a really good Fender to make noice on buy a Custom Shop, the pre CBS arent worth the money as guitars. Even the regular production vintage-styled Fenders are in the majority of cases of better quality than the naturally relicted vintage ones. The feeling of a vintage piece is a different and subjective question, some people just like the vibe and mojo of the old ones. But that habit costs a large amount of money, and I suspect snobbery in many cases.
By the way, when I owned vintage Fenders the alternative was 70s Fenders and the quality of them was not any good as most of you know. And I paid about the same or a little less for them against what a new Fender would cost. And I didnt care if they were refinished or not. A couple of years later the craze began |
