Hi Racer X & Guys

I have heard many-mostly good reports about the CCCP Ge transistors,
and I have also heard a few stories, that the transistors don't perform very well, or you get a low "GOOD" yield, due to things like excessive leakage.

I know you (Racer X), are familiar with Ge transistors & their inconsistencies.

I recently purchased a HEAP of AF111 Ge's from one of my reputable suppliers of NOS goodies.

And as I mentioned above; After testing, I didn't get many good ones.
Through no fault of the supplier.

You must remember, that when these devices were manufactured, the semiconductor industry, was in its infancy, & there were not able to refine the impurities out of the Ge, as well as they do in modern times.
The impurities in the Ge & the low quality doping agents, tend to attack the the transistor's EBC junction, & literally eat it away.

I hope you didn't mind the quick history lesson.

I used to work for Motorola, & learned many things about semiconductor manufacturing pro's & limitations.

They were exciting times, lots of new innovations & manufacturing processes were discussed, both theoretical & real.

If you have a spare weekend, I have a small library, that shows & talks about semiconductor manufacturing in the early days.
Fascinating stuff for some Tech Heads.

One book even talks about, & describes a new device they call it an IC (Integrated Circuit) all 12 & then later 26 components in density.
What will they ever think of next?

Regards Dr. Bob

Bob,refreshers are always welcome. During My IBM days there was this old engineer who had been with the company since the mid '50s. He regaled us with horror stories of the early systems faulting out due to Ge's going tits up.

The ex-commie block stuff is tempting because they are so cheap.

I am gonna build me a Fuzz Box out of a couple of these critters
I got at the flea market.
