We all have a love/hate relationship with the MZ-2 Digital Metalizer pedal. Its pretty much a upper midrange distortion/booster with modulation, can be shrill and icepickish at times. Even Dr.Bob asked if anything could be done. I wished Boss made a Overdrive version of this. One cool thing is the Stereo outputs, not really stereo but output A is the dry signal, and B is the wet, or wet/dry from A only. This all leads back to Level and Tone pots that are two dual ganged controlling the wet and dry to each output jack. The BD-2 had the answer with a similar tone/volume control, but only to one jack. A simple bandpass straight to the level pot. In the MZ-2 its two caps controlling the tone's the distortion and modulation The schems at http://www.godiksennet.com/default.asp?main=Schematics
These are located on the pot's pcb. Increasing C2/C4 will give you some midrange back, getting rid of that icepickish sound when the treble is up Stock its a .01, .022 will give you better response for distortion. 0.033 will give you that midrange horn sound
C1/C3 is the treble cut, again increasing it reduce the highs when turned to the Treble side.
One could also just change one cap and leave the modulation sound up high, or shift the tone of the distortion lower with two C2/C3 is for the Dist, and C4/C1 is for the mod sound.
This is at the edge of the MT board The single trimpot in the pedal controls the depth of the chorus, turning it counterclockwise will increase the depth. First thing tried, makes it deeper sounding. Just mark where the trimpot is preset to.
It maybe possible to increase the rate with the same idea as found in other mods for chorus pedals, or increasing the input bass response or tone control mods in the BD2
good luck, try the trimpot first, very cool |
