Another new guy here!
I have a MIJ BF-2 that I'm trying to dial in a bit.
Any recommended settings for it out there that you like for cool sounds?
Just thought I'd ask. |

Hi trickeedee
Welcome to the forum from Australia.
What type of sound/style, are you trying to achieve with your BF-2?

Hello Dr. Bob from Australia!
Thanks for the greeting. I've fussed around with my BF-2 but haven't found the sound that grabs me yet. I guess I'm looking for a subtle chorusy tone that I would mostly use for solos. Perhaps a David Gilmourish type of sound - if that's possible for me.
I like atmospheric tones - delays (echo), reverb, tremolo, lots of sustain, lush tones and some OD. I like to use a volume pedal for swells and violin-type leads. So, I guess I'm just looking for another tool to add to my arsenal. But I don't have any specific goal for my flanger.
Can you help?
Thanks - Dave from San Diego, CA |

Hi trickeedee
Try a CE-2 & a BF-2, or the other way around. Then play-pick sus2 type chords, (Am with the first finger lifted) It's a match made in heaven, very atmospheric.
I did a post about this (way back), I will see if I can find the post, but no promises.
edited-added later http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2270&whichpage=2&SearchTerms=heaven There are may others in the older 2005 to recent threads.
How old is your BF-2? Is it a SS - 4 digit ink-pad stamped, or newer?
They are all good... Mine was under my mates house for over 20+ years, with a battery in it, leaked a little , but it still works like the day it left the factory.
Regards Dr. Bob

Welcome to the forum.... i have a MIT BF-2 i don't use it all the time on my board especially since i got my CE-2,i used to use it to thicken up the sound of my CH-1... but when i was i set the knobs like this for a 'chorusy sound'
Manual... 9 O'Clock
Depth ....2 O'Clock
Rate.....10 O'Clock
Res...... 9 O'Clock
also try the res and manual knobs at zero.... |

I use mine for that Andy Summers clanging, warped chorus kind of sound, Regatta de Blanc-era. He used an Electric Mistress, but I use an MIJ BF-2:
- Manual: 0
- Depth: 4
- Rate: 4
- Res: 2
(Assuming scale of 0-10, with 5 straight up.) |

This is great! I will be spending my day trying out different settings for my BF-2. God, I love this country!
Dr. Bob - I just velcroed and wired up the BF-2 on my pedalboard, so I'm not sure of the serial number. I just don't want to rip it up right now, but...it is the black label. Perhaps I'll check later today. I bought it from eBay several months ago and it's very clean; in great shape. And I finally have some time to fool with it (I was laid off of my job last month...which is a good news/bad news situation. Lots of time to fool with guitars, pedals, etc,; no income).
Thanks guys for the suggestions!

Sorry to hear that..... happened to me a couple of years back,i mostly gig now and do a bit of taxi driving to pull up the rear.....although this weather it seems to be the other way around..at least you will have time to fool around with your gear...... ..BF-2 is not a bad flanger but for that real gilmour/summers vibe you really need the EH electric mistress..Laurie swears by his..... |

Howdy Trick! Darn new here myself, but have had a long relationship with my BF-2. Second pedal I bought (1984) after my Big Muff Pi (1978), I've found the least annoying res setting is at minimum, but for solo weirdness max it and depth with rate at minimum. Try the mod suggested elsewhere in this forum; it's very easy and reversible if you're handy with an iron. Also try running some drum tracks thru it! Sounds kinda like that Tom Tom Club hit from many years ago. A very useful pedal if applied with creativity. Have at it!

ive used my battered BF-2 (japan) for some oscillation type sounds, it seems when i got it (almost free) that it lacked the flanging sounds so i messed up and fiddled with the 3 trim pots...a lil tinkering here and there, presto! insant oscillation ala teramin sounds!
it can still do flange/chorus settings but i think not the factory setting dials...my question is:
can you guys teach or show me the original exact settings of the trimpots (pics would be great) if ever i would like to go back to the original settings...(not happening this time coz im enjoying the extreme sounds though if ever i changed my mind...)
is this possible?, im thinking all trimpots are set the same in the factory...
thanks in advance! |

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to find other settings to try as well and discovered some nice sounds.
I like the the BF-2 as far as the different types of tones, but I wish it was a little warmer. It has a little shrillness to it (is that a word?) and if it was warmer it would be great.
Are there mods available to warm this pedal up? I'm not much of a solderer, but I would be willing to try if worthwhile. |

If you change R10 to 22k and swap the MN3207 chip with a MN3204, ideally using a socket, you can convert your BF-2 to a HF-2 with minimal effort.
Total cost is ~ $11 and 10 min of your time, but in return you get a nice brighter sounding flanging effect.
