I was investigating the effect of the CE stage of DS1 in its overall tone and it seems that you can control the treble boost just by changing the C4 capacitor. The good thing is that the DC bias of the transistor is not affected by changing C4. You can achieve the same effect by changing the R6, R8 and R9 but this will affect the DC bias. Here are some results for the benefit of DS1 users.
I must say that I haven't tried all these combinations in practice except for a few that mostly lower the treble.
The results are from spice. In my view, it is pointless swapping components in random without relating a component change to theory.
The final decision is based on if I like what I hear though.
I have tried the following caps: 100p, 220p, 470p and 1n (MoonWatcher) purely based on what I had available. Now I am seriously considering putting a switch to have these options easily accessible. Personally, I liked the 1n the most, thanks MoonWatcher.
