Why are some parts practically impossible to find? I'm trying to purchase an IC chip ( M5223L ). I ordered one from a place called Electronix but they are on backorder for over a month now. There are only a couple of places that even list it but require a minimum purchase of $15 to $50 to get this 50 cent part. I'm already into Electronix for almost $19 and still can't get the darn thing. I had to buy a minimum of $10 plus shipping from them. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place on getting this chip. Does anyone know of a source that won't cost me what the pedal is worth just to get it? Does anyone on this forum have one they could sell?.........
G'day! There are differences in "tone" that people can perceive between opamps, but if you don't mind a small change in the tone, there is always the possibility of using a substitute? Possibly the easiest to get is the 4558? I use Small Bear for parts: http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=703
Alternatively, many, many pieces of low/medium-end Japanese audio equipment have SIL opamps in them. I once harvested over 10 SIL opamps out of a small hi-fi system that the local thrift store had thrown away because it was broken.
I don't think the 4558 will work. The M5223L is an inline chip. I tried to find an alternative but came up with nothing that would replace it. Thanks anyway for the tip on that.
G'day! The part number I referred you to at Small Bear is the in-line version of the 4558 (the "4558L")- they look exactly the same as the 5223, and have the same pin-out.
The 5223 is the opamp that was used in the DS-1 up until 2006. The DS-1 replaced it with the NJM2904 so that might be an option as well. Don't know if the pin layout is identical or not. What was the latest DS-1 chip? I've already forgotten but I know someone posted that it's changed again.
Hey Laurie, have you even ordered from Small Bear before? They said they had it in stock but couldn't ship the order for at least 5 days. They sure took my money up front. Is that the way they have done business with you? Are they really that busy?
Yeah... sloooooooow sometimes. But they have always come through. I've ordered from them about 8 times now and only had a couple of "picking errors" that they fixed quickly.
Well then I guess I'll just have to wait. Of course if I can talk my son out of his DS-1 then I can rob the chip from his.....lol. The bad thing is when I modded my DS-1 I saved the chip then it got lost when I moved. Wife probably threw it out......dang the bad luck.
