Hi Von & guys

Thanks for your private mail:
---extract---
Would you happen to know the replacements for these transistors 2SK184.......2SC3378.......2SK118
I'm trying to build a MT-2 from scratch.
Thanks
Von

I thought other members would also benefit, if I posted the reply on the forum.

I don't have a direct substitution lookup list for these, in fact the ones that we used to have at work,
referenced & suggested, even more obscure & difficult to locate parts.

Here is a great (free) link for 800,000+ semiconductor datasheets, that I refer to a lot:
(Correction) OK Apologies guys, I made a typo here on the main link.
BTW the links for the data sheets are correct.

www.datasheet4u.com

All the parts you have asked about are listed there:
2SK184
http://datasheet4u.com/html/2/S/K/2SK184_ToshibaSemiconductor.pdf.html
2SC3378
http://datasheet4u.com/html/2/S/C/2SC3378_Toshiba.pdf.html
2SK118
http://datasheet4u.com/html/2/S/K/2SK118_ToshibaSemiconductor.pdf.html

Hope this helps,
you should be able to cross reference other more common components available here in Australia.

Or perhaps take a peek at the cross reference books, that are sold buy your local electronics suppliers, like Jaycar or Altronics.

Hi Von

That lower box, is a list of the newest data sheets that have been added to the site recently, & an example of what you could type into the search field.

This site just has the data sheets, not any cross references/substitutions.

I thought if you had that actual data sheets, it would help you sought out some local equivalent/substitute parts.

The larger electronic store carry books of transistor & IC substitutes, that you might be able to look at, but as I stated in my earlier post, we used to have these type of books at work, but they usually suggested, parts that were even more difficult to source, or were no longer in production.

Some suppliers have a list of what is known as NTK substitutes,
and will do the cross reference for you.
But be careful as the pinout/leads can be different, on the substitute device.
We stopped using the KTK substitutes, for that very reason.

If I recall, Rockby here in Melbourne carry a disk they sell, with the NTK list.
They have an on line web store, if you search in Google.

Hi Von,

I made a few replica of famous effects and I was using two type of the transistors: BC413C (cheap, low noise) in the route of signal. I would say that it is totally OK in any circuit were designed by either BOSS or IBANEZ (first stage, signal receiver transistor, low pass filters, amplifiers, etc)! I like it not only because it is really cheap (here in Hungary about 0.05EUR/pc) but because of really reliable (never recognised any unwanted oscillations, noises).

My other recommendation would be BC550C with very similar fetaures than BC413C - I would recommend you any of them for replacement in the signal route!

For other usage (flip-flop, or other non-signal-route usages) I would offer BC182-BC184 family. Also realy cheap and I also was using them in my copy circuits - I am still satisfied with them in these stages!

In my understanding is that any simple transistor can be used in any stages just better to put low noise type in the signal route. The final result will be acceptable anyway!

Hope I could help.

cheers

Thanks for that info............these BC413C, have you found them to be more low noise then the ones Boss in using.

Reason is why I used them is the extremely cheap price, and the availability.
Beside of the price the created noise is not bigger than in comparison with any BOSS OD/DS.
I do not checked but in my opinion spec of BC413C is quiet similar (same??) as the transistors in signal route are used by BOSS!
Hope it is answer to you!

cheers
