Ok people, I just wanted to know what people use in their usual setup in terms of Chorus or Flanger or Phaser? What do people use more of and what is a more useable sound/pedal?

I've normally got a CE-2 and BF-2 on my board but I'm trying to cut down how many pedals I use. So, I'm experimenting with a PH-3 at the moment but I feel like I want my BF-2 back on my board.

Maybe I should just get rid of all the modulations and just have more ODs and DSs!!!

Thoughts anyone???

Playing at home I often use some chorus more seldom phaser and flanger. Jamming with others in a band situation I rarely use modulation effects, why???
I think that they interfere a bit with the tone I want (not because they are Boss) and too many pedals are a bit confusing. I like to have two ODs/distortions and a delay (reverb in the amp) and sometimes EH-2 to get that nice sparkle.
When jamming the drummer and bass player starts playing immediately, so there is not any time adjusting the pedals, you should be glad if there is time for tuning

I took od2,ds1,fz3,ph2 and bf2 off my board last week....i'm still using my (analog) ch1 a to split my signal to the amps my board now is wah,cs3,ls2(in the loop tr2,dd3,dd3) then last ch1 i,ve gone for a slightly dirty sound off the amps and clean it up from the guitar and use the cs3 as a booster (level up,sustain low)i came to the conclusion the in a live gig some of these effects get a bit lost in the mix and i've sort of gone off the heavier guitar sounds....i'm more into slightly dirty with a bit of spank to the sound......!!also the more i thought about it i didn't use all these pedals that much except the od2... i kept the ch1 for old times as well as those police/midnight oil covers..really fattens out the sound in those songs...guess i'm just another child of the 80's....!!

I'm Phaser fanatic since always. It's the coolest effect in my coolness meter and Delay is the second. I like it very much combined with delay and a soft distortion. I want to put it back in my main pedalboard but I don't have enough daisy chains yet.

I'm using BF-3 when playing with my band specially with distortion (XT-2 or MT-2). I'm using flanger instead of phaser due to the band style.

I don't like Chorus very much but I know it has its special place in the electric guitar history.

i'm using a CE-2, PH-1r, BF-2 and HF-2 in my set-up.

i tend to use the CE-2 with a bit of delay but i don't use it too much. sound great playing melodic harmonics with delay and CE-2.

i use the PH-1r all the time with clean and dist and especially on solos. it can give a bit of an autowah feel on solos. this pedal is amazing wherever you have it set!

i use the HF-2 set to low rate with distortion. it really adds an underlying slow building swoosh to the sound. great for an outro.

finally i have the BF-2 set to a shimmery chorus sound (res down and rate up) which sounds great with clean tones.

Hmm all good thoughts here!

I really love the CE-2 and CE-3 but maybe I should have a listen to a CH-1. The problem I find is that I don't get much of a chance to use chorus, since I like more chorus in slower stuff but don't get a chance to play slower stuff. I've just a soft spot for chorus!

The flanger on the other hand sounds great when playing hard rocky stuff with lots of overdrive but the sound can over power the keyboards!

I'm still playing with the phaser. I really like the step phaser! Cool effect but not really one to over use I think. Maybe I could stick with a phaser but just keep it 'light'?

Hmm so many decisions!!!

I have CE-3, CH-1, BF-2, Phase-90 on my board, but the I only like the chorus. I dont like flangers/phasers that much, but when I turn them on when I want something extreamly oscillating.

It depends on your style what to keep.

im currently using a CE-5 for Chorus sounds and a PH-1r for phase. i dont even bother with flange anymore, its not my thing.

but for my style, i like the CE-5 best out of all Boss chorus. and the PH-1r is and always will be the best phaser ever for me. "Breathe....Breathe In The Air.."

Is that the Police song "Breathe" or something?? If so, it's second time I have seen it mentioned here for its phasing. Now I'm getting curious about it. I have not heard it yet, where in the web can I hear it (without copyright violation )??

Oh man this is getting hard for my wallet!

I have a CE-2, CE-3 and CE-20 and I like them all. Then again people have been saying good things about a CH-1 and CE-5. Is there a difference between the new ones and earlier models?

I'm a fan of that oscillating sounds too but I just think it works for all the stuff I play I should just change what I play!

Back to the pedal drawing board...

Everybody here seems to speak only about guitar...

As I use my pedals with various instruments, I will try to be as precise as I can...

With electric guitar: PH1r and CE1 (stereo heaven!)

I don't like flanger too much (aggressive effect isn't it?) but when I want some I choose my old Ibanez FL301DX, which is the best to me

with acoustic guitar: CE1 or CE3

with bass: none of those effects, only my favorite bass-amp combo!

with synths: PH2 is cool!

Every Breath You Take - The Police 1983
Definetly sounds like a phaser set low you can hear the swell if you listen. They used a bunch of stuff to record that album, including a Roland JC-120. Guess its more or a chourus out-of-phase effect.
This link describes how Summers used a amp with recording the song.
http://mixonline.com/recording/interviews/audio_polices_every_breath/index.html

Sting also uses a Boss chourus with his bass on the album

I didn't like my bf-2, or the ch-1, sold them both
i have a ph-2 in my chain after a modded sd-1 and before my ft-2
just messing around you get some interesting sounds, might switch them around some more. I'll probably pick up a ce-3 in the near future
you can never have enough pedals...

actually the song i was referring to is "breathe" off Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon Album. its just an amazing lick that sounds even more amazingier with a phase effect.(and one of those lap pedal steels on the lead stuff i think)

For live use I've always found chorus to have the most impact for me. It can really thicken your sound and add a lot of low-end at the right settings. It's also very interesting when combined with a distortion pedal like a DS-1 or a Rat...Bob Mould had an interesting chorused distortion sound on the early Husker Du records which was very cool. Right now the only modulation effect I have is an old CE-3, which I'm using on a few songs in our set. When I first started playing guitar almost 20 years ago (has it been that long already?!) I found a DOD Stereo Flanger in a pawnshop. It was a fairly mild-sounding flanger, and a friend of mine who also played guitar showed me how to set it for a light chorus sound--I used that pedal for years and still have it somewhere. I also tried a Phase 90 in the late '90s for a few years but mainly for special effects. My CE-3 is my favorite chorus pedal...I like its sound better than the CE-2 and CH-1's I've tried.
Great Police article, by the way--I knew a little about how Andy Summers recorded the guitar part from his recent book, but I had no idea the rest of the track was pieced together that way! I'm a huge Police fan, so that may explain my love of chorus effects.
And are JC-120's really not-so-fashionable these days? I like tube amps, but I still say you can't beat a JC for clean tones...I recently picked up a funky, cheap old Crate G40-C which is basically a copy of a JC-77, and it's fantastic...nice chorus sounds and even a spring reverb tank. It sounds great when combined in stereo with a small tube combo...

D'oh
Being a Floyd fan and all, i missed the 'in the air' part.
Thanks for clarifying StratoSphere
Glad you liked the artical. The answer turned out to be bigger than i thought. I was just looking for what pedals they used atm for the album.
