Hi guys, i've got two CE-2 and i'd like to know if is there any difference between them. The first one is the SN 9300 from april 1980 and the second one is the SN 510200 from februart 1985. The first one is black label and the other is green.
Does anybody knows if how should I do to compare the "electronics" (I mean the chip and other things like that) to know if is there any difference between them? Because both of them sounds pretty good and very similar.
And sorry about my poor english.

Hi gsokol I currently have (5) CE-2's, of various vintages. Some are MIT & some are MIJ, and a SS. Both, Black & Green labels.
I have had all of them apart, & they are all made the same, the minor variation in the sound, is due to the manufacturing tolerances of the pots & various component.
Some CE-2's have caps from a different manufacture or batch. Essentially they are all the same.
Don't forget that components do age, and may affect the tone & operation or the pedal.
The chips are the same as well.
Don't worry too much about any minor differences, Just enjoy them.
Regards Dr. Bob
PS. ---- There are major differences, in the circuits & chips in older & newer CE-5 though. One is all analog with a BBD chip, & the other is digital. I posted some pics of my older CE-5 on this forum, some months ago.
And I think Bossarea has the newer all digital circuit board in his. |

Dr Bob, are you sure both the oldest and the latest (MIT) CE-2 are exactly the same inside? There was a topic regarding this about a year ago, with pictures, but I cant remember if the differences was cosmetical or if there where component changes. Right now I have an SS CE-2 and a 1989 MIT CE-2, and for sure they sound different. MIT sounds a bit thinner and dont have as much depth as the MIJ. I would not say that the MIT sounds worse, just different. There is also a truth circulating that MIJ CE-2s are better sounding than MIT, to confirm that we need to compare more than 2-3 units

Hi Goran & guys Good point Goran. Over the coming weekend, I will endeavor (if time allows), to pull apart, all 5 of my CE-2's, I will take some photo's, and notes as well.
I will start with the two, Oldest & Newest, by serial & date code first.
I guess, I just got complacent, & fed up with opening all my pedals. BTW, I just got another MIT CE-2, a few days ago, in box, with manual & warranty papers.
Some of the differences, could be due to component drift, electrolytic caps tend to be the worst, and carbon composition come a close second.
I guess we'll wait and see what happens, when I do the Big pull apart.
Regards Dr. Bob ..

Great Dr Bob! As you have a few CE-2s from different times it would be nice if you could check out the components and sound. The latter would of course be more subjective but it should point us to if the truth is true or not. If the reason for sound differences is component drifting/tolerances even a MIT could sound better than a MIJ. It just could not be that the older an electronic component is the better it sounds Electrolytes 30 years old isnt that great. Ive read somewhere that the difference sound wise MIJ/MIT is that the trimpots was tweaked with more care in Japan, but who knows

I was just looking at the schems from free society, and their copy has the values of two caps at C26 and C27 from 470pf to 220pf. Altho thats at the off/on switch... They may have changed values of comps, but retained the frequency to keep it the same sound but more or less gain, if a chorus can have a gain. Just a wild stab in the dark. Not suggesting you check each pedal to the schems to each other, but if your feeling endeverous... |
