I'm looking at it from the electrical engineering viewpoint - there is no power supply. It's hard to do anything other than some simple passive EQ without power.
To clarify - the "crock" is not that sound is poor (obviously it isn't) but that the box actually does anything useful. Is it possible to actually tell the difference? How much difference can it make without power? How can there be enough stuff in this little box to justify the price? (again, if there is no power, there can't really be any expensive ICs in it - no way to power them)
We've asked this many times over at the Line 6 forum - some believe it is the dog's bollocks (check the Harmony Central reviews), some believe it is just bollocks. Talk of re-integrating orphaned highs etc. do not really help the argument. Yes it is definitely a passive circuit and i can't for one instant believe he has invented a whole new type of passive circuit otherwise it would be patented (and then you'd be able to see the circuit online at the patents office).
Hadley seems like a nice enough bloke though and he does play for Neil Diamond.
Sounds very expensive for what it is...... although having fought with my XTpro for years trying to use it live,i have to say i'm interested but i need the effects loop on the pod to route my dynacord unit as it's all analogue and pre MIDI.....i'm using the pod just for reverb and some preprogrammed delays at the moment..i used it on a gig the other night and i'm not sure if it was the cause but the overaall sound was bad.....we mike up the drums and amps to try to keep the volume down but we had problems with the sound all night....i don't know if it was the pod but i really want the dynacord in the setup i think i will have to rebuild my board to incorprate the dynacord..............i feel i've wasted enough time on the pod and am seriously thinking of selling it...the first time i've been tempted to sell gear in years.....
I don't know much about all the internal workings of electronics Laurie but one thing i noticed with POD is even in bypass it seems to cut the mids from your sound,i twigged this over the last couple of gigs, that it was 'scooping' the mids out...in the manual they suggest setting your amps EQ to netural to compensate but i would have thought that was only if using the amp sims and cabs ...surely in bypass this wouldn't matter....i wouldn't be suprised if the little box that your man is selling is some sort of mid booster or couts the bass and treble a bit....my plan is to get a power amp and use the two vintage 30 speakers with the pod on a 'tube preamp'or one of the amp sims in stereo...there is a 'unprocessed guitar out' connection on the back of the XTpro which i'm going to use to feed the valve amp and the normalto feed the power amp and the two 1x12's...if the 'dry output'to the amp is still cutting the mid's(really noticable when using my overdrive pedal which is fairly mid rangy on the lead channel, makes it sound more like a distortion pedal)i might try putting my GE7 inbetween to replace it....but i need this for my acoustic stuff so i'm hoping it won't...i have all the bits to do it except for the power amp so i'm scouring the small ad's a lot lately looking for a cheap one.....
