| A mate of mine uses an HM-2 for distortion, and I was just wondering how the MT-2 compares. Worth picking one up, or would you recommend finding a used HM-2? |

Hi nathanscribe
The HM-2 And MT-2 are two totally different pedals. The MT-2 has a lot more gain.
The HM-2 is more like a cranked old Marshall. The MT-2 can be set for full-on screaming metal, & yet when you back off the gain, it can me set for a nice 70's type rock overdrive.
Personally, I only like the OLDER MT-2's on low gain/drive settings.
I'm sure you will get many more replies to your post.

Dr. Bob nailed the descriptions pretty well. I can't speak for everyone in the group, but I would venture to say most of us have more distortion boxes, than fingers to change them with. Although pedals can have some basic commonalities, each will have it's own voice, advantages & pitfalls. BEFORE BUYING, unless you have unlimited income (I pretend I do), try (in YOUR RIG) as many as possible. Both of the pedals you mentioned are nice & both can be picked up second-hand at reasonable cost.

The ML-2 Metal Core outperforms ALL of the metal pedals IMHO |

After scouring the web for a few soundclips, I think the MT-2's parametric EQ wins it.
A (new) MXR Distortion+ sounded good, but 'plain' in a way - as did the Boss OS-2. Not keen on what I heard of the Rat; Russian Big Muff was a bit odd somehow. MT-2 had a lot of top end in some clips, but a wide varity of tones seem to be possible with it. Should complement my tube OD nicely.
Looks like I'll probably be building a clone of the MXR as it's a small & easy circuit; buying an MT-2; then adding more as the wallet allows. |

Hi nathanscribe
If you poke around on the web a bit, you should find a Veroboard layout version of the MXR Distortion+
I think it's over on Aaron's Stompbox site.
Let us know how it works out. It's just an LM741 with some clipping diodes to ground on the output of the op-amp, if I remember.

| My son has the ML-2 & I agree that its good. But its a one-trick pony compared to the versatility of the MT-2. |

HM-2's = JCM800 super lead w/ a distortion+ boosting it. MT-2 = versatile, but its signature sound is a hugely saturated mesa mark-ish style with lots of valve compression. ML-2 = tube screamer boosting a dual/triple rectifier w/ a mid scoop.
the HM-2 is by far the noisiest but also the most toneful.
which is best depends on what you need it for.
the ML-2 is probably the most chugga chugga. the MT-2 is most versatile but hard to dial in something perfect. |
