I'm thinking about to swap the bridge 490T with a Dirty Fingers on my SG Special. Maybe I have the opportunity to get a Dirty Fingers from 1979 (or 1978).
Is there any difference between the old and the new ones soundwise? Especially regarding the output/gain.
I know the new ones are wax potted but this can be done to the old one, too. |

| I wouldn't pay extra for an older one, apparently they both sound the same. I am glad you brought this up though, because I am interested in the same subject, although I am not sure how knowledgable the folks on this forum might be on this subject. |

Paying extra isn't the question. I just have the opportunity to get it from my luthier.

Well, that's exactly the question. Do you "think" or "know" they sound the same?

the Dirty fingers pup's are hotter than the 490T's, but what do I know? Apparently the people on this forum are dumb, and wouldn't know about anything as complex as a guitar pickup. |

f course were dumb at this forum. I had a Gibson early 80s Explorer for some time with Dirty Fingers on it. I didnt like them, too much output and that ceramic sound I dont like. But tastes differ I think the reissues are about as close as possible, I cant see why Gibson would try to improve this pick up, and still call it Dirty Fingers. Both the new and old are machine winded and Im sure the used materials are easy to find today. The old ones have the mojo and ageing of the parts on the plus side of course.
