differ... i opened my ce-3 to do the mod explained in my topic on the mod site... when i opened it up realized it already had that BBD chip original... maybe thats where they differ, some (the harsh sounding ones) has theMN3007 chip while others (the good sounding ones ) has the MN3207...
this would explain why some dudes have bad experiences with the ce-3's and some people absolutely love em' |

Hi Nilo
Your post made me curious , I opened my MIJ Black Knob with red indicator lines, CE-3.
It contains the MN3207 BBD And 3102 Clock driver.
I have the data-sheets for both if anyone really needs them, PM me. although the data-sheet for the MN3207 is mostly in Japanese, they both have example circuits on the last page.
I think I have the data for the Clock Driver IC's as well.
As far as performance difference is concerned, I don't have any quantitative or objective analysis, of the difference, changing the IC's would make. I guess I'll leave that to you guys to sort out, but I am still curious.
Regards Dr. Bob |

i tried one out recently at the guitar shop and found it to be very sterile. i have a roland dc50 and i think the chorus is much like the found in the jazz chorus, so its very nice! i was really disapointed with the ce-3. but maybe its worth having a look around at others. sorry this doesnt as to the technical side of this topis... |

Hi Guys
can some of you other CE-3 owners, open up your pedals & tell us what BBD is in your one?
It would make for some interesting data. Perhaps there was even a point across S/numbers & dates - that Boss swapped the MN3007 for the MN3207.
Maybe they never used the MN3007 in the CE-3 & someone just did a few bad substitution repairs.
I just sent a PM to kawayan_strat & it seems that my Old Analog CE-5 uses the MN3007 older BBD. Strange...

The MN3207 works with MN3102 clock generator, and the MN3007 works with the MN3101. They are NOT interchangeable. Each BBD must work with its own clock driver.Probably, there are differences between circuits (CE-3 boards), also!!
( And for Dr. Bob, if youre interested in Data sheets of BBD devices,(almost all of them) PM me! Regards)

| Having never opened up the hatch of my CE-3 I can attest that I love it even though it has a sordid reputation. |

well, of course you have to switch the clock generator too, but basically i belive the difference is in the BBD chip... |

I finally had some time to open up my CE-3 and see what's inside. Its serial # is 507800 which dates it to January 1985. It's got the MN3207 and MN3102 inside. What's interesting is that I also opened my CH-1 to make a comparison. According to my CH-1's back label, it's a "digital device," but it's serial number dates it to August 2001, right before the digital changes in October of that year. Inside I also found an MN3007 and MN3101. Maybe BOSS had already printed the new labels and was placing them on the soon-to-be-changed analog units...? |
