As some of you longtime Bossarea members know, I am in a band, to use the term loosely, with a guy who loves Dimebag Darrell as his set up is 2 Dimebag guitars, Dimebag CFH wah, and a Randall half-stack. Today after practice, which was short since the drummer was MIA, he proceeds to tell me about all this new gear he wants to get. Basically it is just a list of all the same gear Zakk Wylde uses. So I even mention,"You're going from a Dimebags stuff to Zakk Wyldes set up?" To which he replies,"Yeah, I just want to see how I will sound through it." I wanted to tell him, and should have told him,"Well you won't sound like Zakk Wylde.", but I figure if after trying to duplicates Dimes setup and he still doesn't sound like Dime, that maybe he would have figured out that while part of its equipment, part of it is also the user of the equipment. I didn't even get into how even if he gets the same model amp, due to tube and speaker differences and break-in periods, it won't sound like Zakk anyways. But I guess some people never learn, so his plan is to have Zakk Wyldes setup. So I guess instead of being known as, "Jason, the guy who can play guitar with his own style and sound.", he just wants to be known as,"Jason, the guy who has the Zakk Wylde setup up and had a Dimebag setup." So now I am just looking forward to having to go through his "trying to sound like Zakk" stage after going through the "trying to sound like Dime" stage. Geez, its moments like this that make me want to become a better drum machine programmer....

Anyways, just a humorous little story for those of us in bands, those just wanting to remember what its like to be in a band, and those who wonder why bands are such a pain in the arse at times...

These guys are all friends, and I just play with them for fun, but I just love the idea of the dude getting another half stack that he'll only play once a week, and then is overkill since he basically refuses to take any offers we get to play places....

He should just paint a target on one of the deans, then he can have an ugly guitar with an ugly paint scheme

Jack......why does one member call the shots on gigs...??.and what do you and the other guys think about it...?? my band started out to do two gigs...(we had all played in various bands before)for a friend who was getting married and six years later were still going and doing about one/two gigs a week now....i know where your coming from about the other guys set up.... i think thats one of the reasons i play strats so much is that it's a blank canvas of a guitar and so many different artists use them for so many different styles....imho it lets your own take on guitar playing come through....is this the same guy who uses the 'scooped sound' and wonders where his sound has gone as soon as the rest of the band start playing...??..all the guys i play with are in their mid to late 30's and we have our hero worship pretty much out of our system....although we did have a brief hiatus last year over the singer not taking bookings to suit his social life, and underpricing gigs for some of his bigger social circle...the course of true love(and bands...!!) never runs smooth.......

Well, I have the Ampeg Billy Sheehan preamp and I'm a fond user of the Rotosound Billy Sheehan set.
I also have a P-bass with a Hipshot detuner just like he did.
I guess I sound just like him
Off course not, the reason I bought that stuff is cause it works for me.
I do really like Billy Sheehan btw.

I suppose their are two schools of thought on this situation:

1)some will say "how could use a Randall Amp?" when Dimebag did...but to this I answer "Its a good F***'in" amp. Some equipment, tones etc. precede the player. Some pieces of equipment are the Industry standard. Like a Ce-2 or Sd-1.

2)second, to Dimebag/Zakk fan. Just get original at all costs. Put down the guitar and try and develop your imagination. Because that is what is happening here. There is no imagination occrurring. Just a recietal. Be inspired that Dimebag took the time to create a unique spin on six strings and go from there.

Being in a band is way too much like being in a relationship, especially when it comes time to break up.

good story jack. i love guitarists like that. depending on how big of a Dimebag fan he is, he may or may not know that Dimebag never even used his Seymour Duncan Dimebucker pickups in studio or live, he actually used Bill Lawrence XL500's (even though all of his Deans come stock with Dimebuckers.)

is he by chance new to a guitar? i know a lot of people kind of go through that phase when they are just starting out. i remember myself as a newer player, plugging my cranked MT-2 into my Marshall with volume at 2 and both gains at 10, thinking my power chords sounded so awesome. looking back on it its almost embarrassing thinking that people heard me sound like that.

some day your friend will come to his senses and realize that mimicking other guitarists looks amateurish and that all the gear in the world cant make you better. im a firm believer that "tone" comes from within and i especially agree with Franzoni about Strats

I do need to remember that he's only 20 and has been playing for about 5 years, as opposed to my 31 and playing for over 15 years.

Also, I partially blame the internet though and the big music webstores. When I was growing up, I read about and saw Metallica using Marshalls on their first few albums, and I guess if I had a huge webstore at my fingertips back then, I might have been able to get one. However, I just had my local music store which didn't sell Marshalls, so I had to try and get the Metallica sound by trial and error.

As far as the gigs, I guess I should clarify that these are more like a band we know wants us to warm up the audience at some party. We're not the greatest band, but whenever he talks about playing with other bands he says how it would be cool if we could play some stuff like Slayer. So basically, he doesn't want to play unless he feels that other people will think we're cool...So I am beginning to wonder if he plays for his own enjoyment or for what he thinks other people will enjoy. For me the number one rule is as long as you know you're cool, who gives a crap what anyone else thinks. Bands should be like family, this band is a very dysfunctional family, and would be on Jerry Springer if we could all agree on it. The drummer has personal issues and a lack of common sense anyways...

Franzoni and Stratosphere, while I agree with the idea behind the playing of the Strat, I personally have a hard time playing them due to the middle pick ups and knob placement, but if Zakk Wylde played one, I would learn to love them as well Seriously though, I prefer Fat Telecasters lately, and like them because most don't perceive Teles as heavy psychedelic stoner rock guitars much, but CRAP the John 5 and Jim Root Signature Teles may change that perception soon, but luckily neither of them use the neck hum-bridge single coil like I do....So kids, when you want to emulate me and get the jack set up, it has to be the SH pickup configuration

I'm in band too... www.myspace.com/unknownaddictionband. Check us out and enjoy....soon to be recording. Just bringing up the point of using signature gear. The singer/guitarist and I(lead guitar) use dimebag models -lightning bolt and stealth models respectively- out of sheer respect for the man (dimebag). At every gig people say how much they enjoy seeing the guitars and how shattered they were to hear of his passing.... so we feel we owe it to dime to keep his spirit alive for all the rocking bad ass tunes he gave us. It ain't the only guitars we use, but we make a conscious effort to put dime in our show whenever we can. RIP

Wouldn't that just be the Andy Summers set up?

Are you the person who uses the Squire versions? I have a squire with that pick combo.

Actually the Andy Summers has preamps and I think some phase switches, so its not really the Andy Summers. Its more the Keith Richards I think. And yeah, I prefer the Squiers, as I have 3 of the Fat Teles...
