With RE-20 you can dial in a very nice sound to your guitar, sweet and fluid. The reverb is not fantastic but enough to sweeten the delays. Of course it sounds like a spring reverb, but I have never heard any boings from the springs, like the ones you hear in RV-5 or FDR-1, I dont like moddeled spring boings.
The delay sounds are really great, it has an in-built subtle chorus-like effect as the speed of the tape varies a bit, this makes for a really fat tone. When you tap from a long delay to a shorter the delay dont get to the fast one instantly instead it slows down in a very cool way.
It is very fun to use different heads to get different effects, this is really special compared to any other delay pedal.
Oscillation is very easy to get, and they can sound far out too, just rise the number of feedbacks and make the delay time shorter.
I have never used a real Space Echo so I have nothing to compare with, but a friend of mine has the real thing (I discussed this over the phone). He really likes his analog box, but is frustrated by the difficulty to get tapes, all the servicing needed etc.
This is an expensive pedal for sure and quite limited compared to DD-20, but to make that extra to get the ultimate tone there is nothing like it when were talking about delays.

Hi guys
Are there any sound or video demos of this anywhere on-line? I wasn't able to find any at the Bossus site.
Regards Dr. Bob. |

This topic is under Compact pedals, wrongly.
Hi Goran,
First of all, sorry for my late reply, have limited time to be online!
When I opened up this topic I did notice your posts mentioned in the link, but the discussions did not go that much into depth.
As with the Space Echo pedal itself, I have not tried it, am not really interested as well, but do find it interesting to see how Roland/Boss go about with their production of new pedals.
Had some friends in the past who had Space Echos, and some of them bought them in the late 90s for next to nothing, even at that time they were already going up in price.
The difficulty with tapes: I think if you get one which is in good condition, and given the fact that you will only use this piece of equip. under studioconditions, I believe you should be fine. Taking it on the road is another issue, and that is where all those new ditital machine will come in handy!! |
