I purchased the two BD-2 pedals about 10 years apart. I got the first one back in the mid 90s. I never liked it for an OD, there was always this harsh and nasty high end that I couldn't dial out. However, it excels as a clean boost (volume up, gain down) and as long as I keep the tone control around 9 o'clock, it doesn't get harsh sounding.
The new BD-2 is a different story. I bought i used about 3 months ago with the intention of modding it. It sounds completely different than the other one. It actually sounds good as an OD, but terrible as a clean boost. Go figure. I'm not sure if it is the aging components in the older one, or if Boss made changes to the circuits. So far I haven't taken the time to investigate.

There is may be a good explanation for this. Early BD-2, according to the schematic, came with the M5218AL opamp chip. The new one I bought a couple of months ago came with the NJM4558LD chip (see tubescreamer) and sounds terrific.

Thanks for the info. Your post got me curious, so I entered the serial numbers in the Boss Decoder on this site and here's what I came up with:
BD#1 SN: PU16348 made 12/05, so this is obviously the newer one. SN: DK14680 made 8/97, so this is the older one.
I took them apart and both had the M5218AL chip in them. So it must be that the older one has aging parts.

Hi guys, Here's an update of my board. Set up in stereo from the PN2. The XO Worm is nice and warm sounding when the range knob is before 3:00, and the expression function is killer. The tap-tempo is there for when I swap out the DD-2 for the Marshall Echohead which is a great pedal. The DOD FX-17 is one of my favorite wahs. There's also a peep (photo eye sensor) that I have connected to the PS3 for expression. Lovely. And those little boomerang looking things on the knobs are Option Knobs. Excellent tools. Most pedals are mounted with dismantled bike links. |

I have a BD-2 from around 1997, my very first pedal ever , and I have never had any problems with it having a 'harsh and nasty high end'. Both with my Strat and my LP it sounds just fine with the tone knob at noon. Gives me that tube amp break up at bearable volume levels. Maybe it's because I play it through a very warm Fender tube amp? |

I'm starting to think it is just something wrong with that particular pedal. The newer one I have is identical to it, but it sounds much better.
I had bought the new one with the intention of modding it but it sounds so good, that I think I'll leave well enough alone.
I thought about "fixing" the older one, but it sounds so good as a clean boost, I think I'll just leave it as is, too.

Sorry it took me a bit to reply...Mansun....PM sent via e-mail. The pedal board is the GPT-BL-PWR which translates to Gator Pedal Tote-Black-Powered. I'm not sure if I'll outgrow this PB though. I'll be looking into Pedal Train or Lyt Pedalboards should that happen.

Hi! I'm a new poster but a long time reader. I've seen your evolution but recently I noticed the pedalboard itself. Is it a Gator FL one? Is it powered? If not, how do you power your pedals? I'm thinking of buying a harley benton power plant with a Gator FL pedalboard.
Thanks!

Get an SD-2. It's definatley one of my favourites. I have an OD-2r, and I'm not that into it. The SD-2 blows it away! |

Thank you! I thought so, I'm deciding between the powered Gator or the empty one along with a Harley Benton Power Plant. Thanks to the link you've e-mailed me now I see how this bag is designed (the previous shots I've seen are not enough close), and the way it mounts the power brick. I hope I can use those four screws for the Harley, and if I can't I'll use velcro instead. |

Love the SD-2....I still need to get a latching footswitch to get the full capabilities out of it. I thought about get a Loop-Master footswitch. They are spendy but have a smaller footprint than the Boss FS-5L/U.
Here is a mod as recommended by B.A. (Boss Area) user Mesjoggah in the SD-2 Thread. I think you can source schematics from the web.
quote: Originally posted by Mesjoggah I didn't read your thread but found out just last week that the SD-2 has a lot of fans amongst bas players, especially when its modded for bas use.
Here's the mod:
Mod A; more clarity; Replace C34 / C13 / C9 / C18 / C43 and C22 with it's better quality replacements
Mod B; tubescreamer:
- Remove C36, C46, C47 and R49; replace this with an 1 uF NP cap (the start of C36 and the end of C46 are so close you can fit in a cap quite easily) - Replace D4 with a silicon diode - Replace D6 + D7 with one 1N400X diode - Replace C28 with a 220 nF cap - Replace R37 with a 4.7k resistor and run one end to Vref (which is on one side of R51; close. You can use the leftover traces of D6 / D7 to overcome the small distance without short circuiting - Replace C12 with a 1 uF NP cap

You could make yourself a tiny one for a fraction of the cost - They are just about the simplest DIY job and well worth the (minimal) effort involved.
