Should I think about grabbing it, or am I supposed to be looking for a CS-2? Not for collection, I just want a good compressor, and I'm under the impression that old boss ones are pretty decent. |

That's a great price for a SS - grab it. OK, OK... said like a true collector. Sorry
In my opinion (and opinions vary!) the best Boss compressor is an older CS-3 - the one with a dBx chipset.

i have a mint cs1 with original receipt of purchase( in japanese)..box and manual. i find that its too squishy for guitar my friend who is quite a famous musician now... used to be a sound engineer at the studio that we go to.
he says they are good for bass and whacko effects.
whatever whacko effects mean...
i do agree with him on the bass recommendation.
they are definately squishy.
i have a cs3 that in the real world is much better for guitar compression.
i understand that that cs2 gets very good reviews... |

| Well... I thought I'd ask around first. I think I'm gonna go ahead with my original plan to build my own modified Ross. Sorry nosi0! |

No matter what you plan on doing i think it will be a worthy investment you could sell it for more than 150% the current asking price. then you can use the 30 bucks you made to make your own pedal and you would have practically got a free pedal |

I'd get it. 60 bucks for a silver-screw CS-1 is a no-brainer even if it is in average condition.
I'm one of the odd ones that prefer the CS-1 over the -2 or the -3...and it does work great for recording bass guitar directly to the board. |

$60 is absolutely worth it for a CS-1. Even just to have its characteristic mega-squish available to you..
If not, buy it and sell it here for a (mild) profit! |

CS-1 is not the best compressor around, not by far, as said above an old CS-3 is much better. But a good Ross-clone is far better than a CS-3, so build one by yourself! I have a Ross Clone handbuilt by a Swedish builder, Stove CompRossor, and I tell you this is a really good compressor. I have all Boss compressors so I know what Im talking about.
