Well heres the story. I, like most guitar players Im sure went through the phase of "hey, i need a bunch of pedals". So I did went and got a bunch. It started with my boss ch-1 and ended up with my EH LPB-1. Well when I started experimenting with different pedals, I studied the sound the pedal made, rather than how it was affecting my TONE. Well my mesa tubes were in need of replacing. I went out got the new tubes in and just jammed plugged straight in. Not going through my 7 (used to be 10) pedal pedalboard. Boy was I blown away by the sound. It had been years since I really took the time to listen to unaltered, pure tone. The tubes themselves really made the tone better. Well I plugged into my board after a few minutes and was really turned off by the sound. I must admit however, no regular person would ever notice the difference between straight in, and with the board. But I noticed my sound through my board had more of an ugly high end, and really took away from the bass and even the sustain slightly.
I started taking off different pedals in order to find out what was making my tone so displeasing to my ears. When it was all said and done, I had removed my sd-1, which is the pedal I swore by since I got, and my ls-2 line selector. I dont know anything about pedal components, but these pedals really just affect my tone in a bad way. Im down to just 5 pedals now. Tu-2 Tuner, dd-6, ch-1, power booster and ns-2. Now to my ears, it sounds extremely close (I say extremely because to my ears it sounds exactly, but Im sure there is a very MINOR difference) to what it sounds like when I plug straight into the amp. I also experimented taking off the ns-2 and tu-2, as I've read frequently they can take away from the sound, I didnt notice anything with the tu-2, and believe it or not, in my opinion the ns-2 makes it sound BETTER. Not only does it take away the feedback, but it kind of tightens things up to my ears.
I now use no other alternate distortion boxes/overdrive boxes to achieve a great sound. Im sure none of you care, but Im extremely excited to now be very happy with my sound. Just 2 effects (which arent the nicest, but I very seldom ever use them).
As I said, Im a noob when it comes to knowing anything about the inside of a pedal. My guess is that since these pedals are not true bypass, it had an effect on my tone no matter engaged or not.
And just out of curiosity, do they make a true bypass overdrive? or is that not possible? |

Hey, nice wee read there. You can buy true bypass overdrive pedals, but not from boss. Have a look at some other manufacturers. |

| I appreciate you taking the time to read my post. Would something like a maxon OD, or Ibanez tubescreamer be true bypass? Im not looking to get one, but just curious. I looked around at some quick specs, but it didnt say anything about the bypass, so I guess its not? |

| Very interesting! I did not know one of those existed. I'll have to look further into that. Thanks! |

You can also take a line out or a effects send from your amp into the pedals and return them through a second amp in a wet/dry rig so the your tone from your main amp is untouched..also gives you a wider sound....if the second amp has a effects loop just plug in the return and you have your main amp controlling the EQ and channel switching etc..... or you can go wet/dry/wet with a stereo power anp and a couple of cabs..thats what i'm in the process of building at the moment..scaling down the board and keeping my rack out of the front end of my amps to prevent tone loss.... |

I'm not sure about the Maxon but a Ibanez TS is absolutely not true bypass. It has more bleed through than Boss pedals. (the Keeley model is TB). |
