Does anyone here do this at all? Is it simply a matter of getting an XLR-to-1/4 cable, sending the mic output into the pedal, and then connecting a 1/4-to-1/4 cable to your multitracker?

Specifically, I'm looking at running vocals through the RV-5. Just to see if anything cool can be done.

I had a friend in a band who used pedals on his vocals. I remember he had a DD-3 and a few modulation pedals. He got some pretty cool sounds!

Yeah, I would love to try a DD-3 as well. Do you know if he had any special connectors or anything?

Mic needs to go through a preamp to bring it up in level a bit. Needs to be about 200 to 300 mV into a pedal and mikes are typically in the tens of mV. Feed the effected signal into a line input of the mixer.

Awesome, I was already planning on running it through a preamp anyway. So I don't have to buy a hi-z converter or anything like that?

make sure to use a preamp before the effects though so you have a better signal to noise ratio on the effected signal

I used long time ago the CE-2B and I got a nice chorus for voice. DD-3 too. Try messing with the delay time as you sing :)

I use my pedals in the Insert-loop of my mixer when doing vocal stuff.

The LMB-3 for example is surprisingly good for it! It limits the peaks effectively and the enhancer function adds clearance and understandability. I also use my Marshall ED-1 compressor pedal in the loop and from time to time my PQ-4 (the GE-7 is not too good for vocal stuff). I also played around with my OC-3 and my voice - yeah, that's nasty! And my well-beloved SYB-3 is fricking awesome when used in the wave shaping mode with vocals. Distortions didn't go that well until now - I haven't tried my FZ-2 so far.

In the next overall effects chain of my mixer I use my Marshall SV-1 chorus pedal to make the signal stereo (it's capable of doing it in a non-chorus sounding way, too!) and then it goes into my DD-7 and the RV-5. Spaceous vocals can be easily produced that way. Easily - not cheap!

Phaser and Flanger can also result in cool sounds. But when I tried to use my GCB-95 Cry Baby in the Insert-loop I had to fight with enormous feedback problems. But I have to try it out again one day, since it's a few years ago when I switched my wah pedal in the chain. Oh, and of course my Korg 301dl delay pedal with its LoFi mode (tape echo sounds at its best!) is always fun to play with - whatever instrument is run through!

Our vocalist tried a delay from Marshall but couldn't make it sound properly...

I used to do this a lot in a couple of bands I was in ages ago.

It depends on what effect your going for as to how well it will work.

We mainly used it for Ministry type crazy vocals. For that we never ran a preamp in front, we'd get the extra gain from the distortion or compressor that was at the start of the chain (and my screaming).

For more toned down stuff a pre-amp will go a long way.

I've wondered about this myself, with the difference in impedance. I'll have to give it a try.

Anyone a fan of Deerhunter? Bradford Cox uses effects on his vocals (mainly thier 2nd album), tremolo sounds pretty cool.
