Anyone have experience with this speaker? AVT series specifically? (I believe these were originally made for Marshall's "AVT" amp line?)

There is one locally in a box (an extension cab) for about US$150.

What are your thoughts?
- Good deal?
- OK deal?
- Crap speaker, don't touch it?

Is it just the speaker your after...?... i remember marshall started making a lot of ext cabs out of chipboard rather than ply around that time........i use our drummers MG 100 FX combo for rehearsing which is the follow on from the AVT and valvestate line of stuff and it's not a bad amp but the tolex and cabinet is nowhere as near hardwearing as my on my older amps from the 70's....i used it on a few gigs a couple of years ago and it didn't survive being thrown in and out of the van too well....

Chipboard?
That's dangerously close to pressed sawdust.
The bastards!

Laurie,

The Celestion G12 is an exellent speaker. It is a classic. Not sure what the AVT looks like, when I google I get G12 reissues and some older G12 speakers.

I have a few amps which carry that speaker. They are all older amps, some are homebrews which someone made for me a while ago. On one of my HiFi's I use a G12 all the time, great for Rock and guitardriven music, very midrange and direct as compared to typical HiFi speakers.

I have been using the speakers over 10 years now, and they just came to me. When I did get some other Marshall amps it struck me how good the Celestions sounded, then I started the reseach and discovered that the G12 is a classic. Orginally it was a low wattage speaker, but from the mid 70s onwards they made them more powerful as that was the trend at the time.

Not sure if your speaker comes with a cab. Is that price good? Not sure, as I bought mine a long time ago, and prices since then have been heavily inflated. The speaker itself you should enjoy if you like the typical Marshall sound, but even on other amps it will sound good too, just look at me using it as an all-round-music speaker, but then I may have strange tastes when it comes to music, sound and women................who knows??!

Orange uses G12s in some of their cabs so imagine they're pretty good.

I'm completely cool with the thought of a G12, but it is a 100W version for Marshall's AVT series. Usually, high power sacrifices tone - comments on that were what I was really fishing for.

There is one of those for sale on craigslist.
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/msg/931571810.html
I checked the Marshall forum and found that they are changing them for vintage 30's. They are sometimes called Goldbacks but they aren't real Goldbacks. They are Marshall Gold Celestion's. Goldbacks are 50 watt and these speakers are 100 watt. They come out of the hybrid amps. The guy thats tryng to sell his on Craigslist says it "sounds like a cross with a Vintage 30 AND A G12T-75 mixed together". I am going to pass on it.

i put two original greenbacks into my 2x12 cab for the marshall head....very happy with the results..... i had two V30's in and while a great sounding speaker, not as fat as the greenbacks and much louder..still i plan to use them soon in another project i have in the pipeline....i think people are starting to realise that high output pickups and speakers can sacrifice tone for volume...well i'm starting to think it possible anyway.....if these are relly based on what was described in the link i reckon they might be a pretty cool speaker...again to reiterate what the man wrote in the link ...tone is subjective and what i like you might hate tonewise, see if you ca try before you buy or at least see if anyone else has them and what they think.....but personally i love what the greenbacks do for me...if you want to hear them in action click on my profile and the youtube links are on our myspace page....i'm using a SD twin tube classic for overdrive and the marshall and 2x12 with some boss pedals of course.........

Why are V30s so damned popular? Are they efficient, or cheap, or standard punch for modern music? I've got 3 cabs with 'em & wished at least one came with something a bit more vintage with earlier breakup characteristics.

You are in luck DeFrag. I am perfectly willing to trade you for a nice Blue Marvel.
