Okay cannot be very specific at the moment but just some general pointers:
The Cure: A lot of the early ablbums contain sounds of Bosspedals, and you can hear it straight away, as the music has not been doctored that much. They have a lot of intos where they use Flangers, or Phasers, and very often you will hear the gtr. on its own, so you realy hear the effect shine. They were one of the reasons why I wanted to try Flangers. Together with my cousin we used to call the Flanger sounds: That HollowTube Sound. I know it does not translate very well in English [ my first language is Dutch ] it was more a name to describe what the effect sounded like as none of us knew the term Flange.
The Smiths: The chorus sound is very distinctive on a lot of their songs.
The Pretenders: Again their early albums, the Christmas song has a great chorus on it, came out around '84 so guess it is a Boss one. They were also fond of Flange, you can hear some great examples on their first album.
I know these examples all contain modulation effects, find it harder to point in the direction of overdrive and distortion sounds, as you can doctor them so much during the recording process.
It is often pointed out that Andy Summers of the Police use Bosspedals, but I am not sure about the compact pedals. He used a lot of Chorus, Delay and Reverb, and most of the well-known songs are from the late 70s at a time when Boss did not have any compact delays apart from the DM-1, so not sure if he used any of the later compact models. Do like his chorus/reverb/delay sound, it is very thick and a few days ago I stumbled on a very similar sound, but that may be better left for another thread.............

I think the Cure used CE-2s, Andy Summers used a DC-2, Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters has a DM-2, Graham Coxon used a PN-2 and VB-2 on a couple of songs (VB-2 on a song called Inertia, I believe)

Anything from Nirvana (except for maybe Bleach, I'm not sure about that album). Kurt Cobain used either a DS-1 or a DS-2 depending on what time period of their 15 minutes of fame we are talking about here.
Stone Gossard and Mike McCready use Boss delay pedals in their setup. There are only a few songs were I have really noticed the delay, "Nothing as It Seems" being the foremost example. Stone uses a DD-3 and Mike uses a DM-2 as I recall. |
