Hey guys,
I'm looking for a good fuzz pedal... I will be using a wah with it as well, and playing through an American strat. I would really like a good fat, sustain with no cut outs while I'm using the wah...
was looking at:
-MXR M173 Classic 108 Fuzz Pedal -Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi w/ Tone Wicker -Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi USA
Have to get this online, so all recommendations, demos, etc... would be greatly appreciated
Thanks! |

Hi Blackrash
I belive Goran & The_Doc, have a few Fuzz pedals. I know Goran has been talking about the Danelectro Cool Cat Fuzz.
Some of the other members have been building a few DIY Fuzz clones.
Don't forget the older & out of production Boss FZ-2, it's probably one of the most sort after of the Boss Fuzz pedals.
But in the end because tone is so subjective, you will really need to check them out yourself.
Are you able to build on1 of the DIY kits, or a vero-board version?
Regards Dr. Bob

I would go for a good Fuzz Face clone, they are simply the best ones. Silicon or germanium is a matter of taste, I like both. Really good ones: Hartman Cornell Monsterpiece
Cheap and good: Danelectro Cool Cat Fuzz
Boss fuzzes is not so good, but I like FZ-2 a bit. |

I highly recommend the Analogman Sunface, I've got the BC108 version and it's great.
Only problem with the Sunface is that it doesn't like buffered pedals before it. If you run your wah after any dirt pedals you'll be OK but if you run it first then the Sunface won't sound too good.
What wah pedal are you using? |

...sorry for the double post. ...agreed on the Sunface...supercool unit the 108 by Dunlop is basically the BC-108 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face w/ an added buffer switch that solves the wah/fuzz problem. I personally hate the way wah sounds after fuzz so I went w/ the Foxrox Wah Retrofit http://www.foxroxelectronics.com/Wah%20retrofit%202.html ...now i'm a happy boy |

| A relatively in-expensive Fuzz that I really like is the Biyang FZ-7. 3 modes, so like 3 Fuzzes for the price of one. You should be able to coax a good sound out of it... |

Thanks guys!
I am using a Original Thomas design Jimi Hendrix wah, and I run it before the fuzz, and all my pedals for that matter...
Wah link: http://www.chrisguitars.com/dunlop-hendrix-wah-060915.jpg
I am going to research some of these fuzz pedals, as I haven't heard of some of them.
Price will be considered, I would like to keep it at around $100 USD.
I will go to my local guy this week and see if I can find some of the mentioned models and try them out/get some info...
I have a GC at home too, so I am sure I can find that dan electro, and some other std. models...
BTW... I'm running this through the Pignose GR60 60 watt all tube amp with 6L6 tungsol tubes(rest are std.), but I am hoping to get a crunchy Marshall (hopefully with built in sound minipulation, or I will get a jmp-1 with it) for Christmas
Big difference in amps, but I would like to use it on both... Playing blues, Classic rock, some alternative reggae, and Nu-metal(hopefully better when I get the Marshall) as of now
Thought I would just throw that out there
Thanks again guys!

Hi Blackrash,
As Dr. Bob mentioned, I do have a thing for fuzz effects. This is included in a post elsewhere but there have been a few additions to the collection since then - just can't seem to stop myself
If you want to know about anything in particular on the list, just let me know and I'll fire it up and report back here. Happy to help if I can.
The link below will take you to some rough soundclips I did of a few of them (just guitar / drum loop / fuzz - nothin' fancy), and, again, posted elsewhere but repeated here for ease of reference.
Here's the list...
BOSS Hyper Fuzz FZ-2 BOSS Fuzz FZ-3 BOSS Fuzz FZ-5 (COSM) MXR Blue Box MXR JH-2S Classic Fuzz (Jimi Hendrix System) MXR JH-3S Octave Fuzz (Jimi Hendrix System) DOD Classic Fuzz FX-52 Electro Harmonix Big-Muff EH 3003 Electro Harmonix Big-Muff Russian Green (Sovtek) Electro Harmonix Big-Muff Russian Black Electro Harmonix Double Muff Electro Harmonix Little Big Muff Electro Harmonix Metal Muff Burford Electronics Fuzzrite Burford Electronics Britt Face Fulltone Octafuzz Fulltone Soul - Bender Fulltone 70 Fulltone 69 Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz Retroman Sybil Frantone The Sweet Bixonic Expandora 2000R Jacques Mercer Box II DAM Meathead Custom Deviever Never Drive Baja Tech Custom Bone Bender Top Gear Fuzz Kay Fuzz Tone
and here's the link to some soundclips for a handfull of them...

If I would be you, I buy the Big Muff USA. I really love it! Very long and creamy sustain! Amazing tone! Bigger tone than case !
Joske
PS: I do not work at EHX

| If you're going to go with a Big Muff pedal, go with the BYOC Large Beaver instead of the current Big Muff, it's so much better. |

Just added a quick demo of the Sovtek Green Big Muff to the soundclips above.
[Dr. Bob - you might be interested in that one (re. your pm a a while ago) - settings are all three dials at c. 50% and guitar volume (a strat) backed off a couple of notches. This is my normal setting - not too much fuzz on the pedal controls and manage it through the guitar volume and the gain on the amp channel (not clean - just breaking up). Regards ]
I'll try and put another clip together soon for the 'Big-Muff EH 3003' which is an early 70's US model.

Little big muff? Is this worth a start? sounds nice in the demos, and I have found one local for a very tempting price...
Thoughts? experiences? |

I have had Cornell (yes, its the amp builder) The First Fuzz for a couple of month, its a germanium with NOS components inside. Its a very good fuzz, highest possible quality. I sold it a week ago as I got a great offer for it. As it is germanium its on the darker side, but played with a strat bridge pickup it really sings.
