Hey guys, I just realized I've never asked this question here before, and figured one of you guys might have heard the answer over the years. Andy Summers (of The Police) had a signature 1961 Telecaster that was recently remade in a small quantity by Fender. The original Telecaster included and extra knob which was a built-in overdrive, kind of like the one guitarfetish sells I guess. I was thinking back then (since I dont think he did the job himself) that someone probably just took a pedal, or one of those little Dan Armstrong effects and rehoused it into the telecaster body. Any thoughts on which circuit it might be?
Thanks for any help you can give. |

Hi Dingus I believe Basstrya did a similar thing, by fitting an Op_Amp booster, into his black Telecaster. There are pics of it, in a link somewhere here on the Forum.

Hi Dingus,
Not a straight answer really, but Pete Cornish used to design tools for Andy. Check out this list here: http://www.petecornish.co.uk/client.html
Andy is a few times mentioned in the list.
Now I have even seen pics of the guitar you mentioned where the lead comes almost staight out of the pick-up as the guitar was slowly falling apart.
At some stage the pick-ups went, the story is mentioned in his bio. Interestingly enough you do notice this: The pick-ups of the Tele did get rewired, and its sound was altered forever. After that period [during recording of Ghost in the Machine] Andy was using more Strats.
As a listener you can hear it actually: That famous guitarsound he is renounded for can be found on the first three albums, after the "accident" the sound is somewhat different, because he may have used different guitars. |
