hey all
i just received a ds-1 i purchased on ebay last week. i purchased it with the intent of doing some keeley mods on it...but when i plugged it in to make sure it worked, it had some issues.
in bypass mode, the pedal functions as it should, i.e. sounds like the guitar with the pedal off.
when i turned the pedal on...nothing...so i turned all the knobs all the way up...faint horrible dead pedal sound...
so first, i replaced my battery with a known good one...still nothin
so i looked into it.
d1 was burned to the point that it exploded! it was in two pieces, charred and black...so after I sent the seller a sternly worded email i looked further...
C23 also exploded and sprayed its contents of fluff over some resistors and things.
so, since i had the parts on hand anyway, i decided to replace them both. i used an IN4004 for D1 and a 100uf 50v for c23
so then i tested it again...when it is off, it's normal.
when it's on...nothin!!!
so the question, o boss gurus, is: am i going to have to trace my way back through the circuit relplacing everything that was fried by the reverse voltage spike until i get to the place that it ends, or are there typical things that fry when this happens that you are fairly certain that are cooked that you can point my way to and hopefully save hours of frustration and save me from taking a claw hammer to this thing?
(oh yeah. nothing yet from the meathead that sold me this thing negative feedback for him....)

[:g]
thanks all

Welcome to Bossarea ninjasef!
I wish Ebay sellers would be honest.. sorry to hear this news. It makes me so damned angry & we're starting to hear more & more of these type of reports. Its almost to the point where I won't even look for pedals on Ebay anymore.
Hang in there mate, one of our resident techies will be along shortly.
One of the 1st things they'll want to see are some good, closeup photos of the boards, front & back so you may as well prepare some up for us!
Good luck. |

thanks defrag!
basically i paid 30 bucks for a pedal the seller knew wasn't functioning. and the ebay resolution thing takes so long, sometimes its not even worth the effort
<sigh>

| kinda a tough spot you are in. it takes about 2 weeks for stuff to resolve with ebay. i hope that you can get it working.the only advice i can give is replace what you obviously see as being broken |

| Most likely the opamp is gone ! Try to find a replacement, it's not that difficult to change it. |

thanks cctsim
do you know of a way to test it without a scope, just to make sure...
are there other op amps that work as replacements?
this one is a m5223al 422001
are there sweet op amp upgrades i can get?
is there a thread about that?
thanks |

Hi ninjasef and welcome!
When D1 let go, full reverse voltage was put on the opamp. Almost certainly killing it.
All of the mods for the DS-1 I've seen are for components external to the opamp - nothing calls for an opamp change (not to say there aren't mods out there that do).
Anyway, put in a new opamp and it should be all OK. Once it is working again, there are lots of mods (including the Keeley ones)...
There is NO WAY the seller would have thought it was working. What usually happens is "oh crap I used the wrong adapter and I killed it - quick unload it".

thanks laurie
i think the seller did EXACTLY that...
do you have favorite models and suppliers of opamps, or should i just go to radio shack and blindly grab something that vaguely looks right?

thanks again

You could by one of this SIL to DIP adapters for $3, socketed and try different opamps. The possibilities are then endless, but I warn you, may get addicted to mods (like me). Here is the link for the adapter:

If you are a bit skilled with soldering you could build your own adapter. If you are interested I can post some pictures how to do it. |

i like the idea of the sil to dip processor converter, but i don't know. from the thread you sent me, laurie, it seems like the mitsubishi sounds the best.
what i'm going for, in the big picture (you know, once it WORKS ) is to smooth out some of that high-end graininess. even the keeley modded ds-1 i have is grainy up there...not smooth.
but form the thread you posted, seems like that guy couldn't find one that worked better.
any other opinions?

So what's the seller's eBane handle? I still buy stuff there sometimes and would definitely like to know another seller to avoid.
Seeing as he / she proudly ripped off a buyer in an auction, I'm sure that individual would be proud to be "outed" as a scammer. |
