Hi. Its amp bying time. I now feel I've god eanugh (boss) stompboxes to retire my multi fx setup. But I nead to amplify my sound somehow.
I vant to use my boss distortions and overdrive boxes for well owerdrive and distortion and want an amp (combo) or two (for stereo) that realy makes them sing.
An fender twin (or two) would be lovely, but its way over my budget. So im turing to you for advice.
I dont care if it went out of production years ago, as long as its relativly erasy to get hold off.
Please help?

Ampeg VT-22?
Suggested as a potentially less pricey alternative to a Twin, but similar to it (though I'd have to compare street prices between them currently getting fetched on eBay to be certain). Apart from the SVT, Ampegs are highly underrated amplifiers, in my view.

I guess we don't have a lot of amp suggestions!
I've had an Ampeg VL-503 for over 10 years, and while I like alot of the features, I still plan to do some mods to it. The clean channel is great, the overdrive channel I really like, too. I'd like to have some different EQ options on the Lead channel. I never seem to be able to get the sound I want from it.
I also have an old Fender Vibro Champ, but it's mainly a sentimental piece. It was my 1st amp that my parents bought me when I was in the 7th grade. I don't want to mod it, so I'll probably sell it eventually and buy something small that has more versatility.
I spent some time with a Fender "The Twin" recently and was very impressed with it. It looks like a Fender Twin Reverb, but it just says "The Twin" on it. It's not the red knobbed "Evil Twin". He bought it new in 1994. Great Fender clean channel and surprisingly good overdrive and distortion.
A while back I played around with a Crate V16 Palomino at Guitar Center and was very impressed with it as a small amp. It seems to be a V1512 made exclusively for Guitar Center/Musician's Friend with the blonde tolex. You won't find the V16 on Crate's website. The Crate V3112 might also be worth checking out.
I've got a Crate solid state GT3550H that needs repair, so I don't know what it's like yet. The reviews on Harmony Central all seem to focus on how loud it is and what things it can kill/destroy/maim with its sheer volume, so I'm not sure what it will actually SOUND like.
Grace and peace,
Steve

How many decibels do you need to produce (do you really need an 80W amp)?
What styles of music will you play?
What tones are you trying to get (any particular artists we may have heard, for comparison)?
Incidentally - and anyone, please disagree with me if you like - the last thing I'd want if I were intending to use pedals for distortion would be a loud, clean amp like a Twin... I'd want something warm and easy to overdrive, to smooth out diode (etc.) clipping.
Just thinkin' aloud...

I don't think a JC-120 will give you the sound you're after. I've been using one for a few years and although you can get a fair distorted sound using pedals, I've always been unable to get a real tube sound out of it. For clean sounds it is awesome and that's where it shines.
I've played through a Bolt 60. It's 10-15 years ago but I remember that I was pleased with it. It's so long ago I can't describe the sound but I do seem to remember that it was begging for a booster pedal like a tube screamer or similar in front of it.
Another new amp that I've been impressed with is the Peavey Classic 30. I played it briefly in a store a while ago and it knocked my socks off. |

I'd like to play "drummer loud" and I want to have a variety of sounds. Using different dist pedals to do the changes, so it's important that the amp reflects the distortion the pedal makes in a good and clear way. I play blues, metal, pop rock and some jazz.
And I also want to use two amps, not necessarily of the same type, to get real stereo of my choruses and delays. I'm looking at 1x12, 1x10 and maybe 2x10 but I think 2x12 is to much to carry around, Especially two of them.
I'm also looking into heads as I've got a randall 4x12 cab and an hartke 4x10 cab that sounds really good in their own way.
I most say you're a most helpful gang. Tanks
