| active pickups help alot! an eq i think is essential, Kirk Hammett uses a tube screamer (ts10 i believe) and plenty of volume. its really just experimenting with your amp settings and some overdrive pedals. i think one thing people forget with the early metallica sound is that its not really a "metal" sound like pantera. its more or a beefy hard rock tone. good luck anyways! |

| At gig levels or bedroom levels? That's the question, IMO. Gig levels, you can use less distortion. At home, the MI Audio Crunch Box is the '80s metal sound. |

some say the MZ-2 sounds like the ...and Justice For All sound. but you have to remember every album they have done sounds very different. Kill Em All is polar opposites from Justice. i say any heavy pedal (HM-2, MT-2, MD-2 etc) and a EQ set right can get you any metal tone, metallica included.
about the pickups too. i used to have a Jackson with EMG 81s and 85s, and to tell you the truth, after running it through my chain with distortion pedals, i couldnt tell the difference between that and my passive Humbuckers. i find you can really only tell the difference between actives and passives when you plug straight into your amp... otherwise the pedals kill the hotness of the pickups.. well just from my viewpoint anyway.
some people (myself included) become surpirsed when they go by a signature pedal or even copy the artists rig exactly and find out they still sound nothing like the artist. |

haha yes! well said. a great example are the dunlop artist pedals. none of the artists use them, they use the originals.
however, in themetallica case, im sure a mesa boogie rig would emulate their sound pretty well.
also, kill 'em all sound is a marshall head with a pro co rat distortion pedal. thats it, nothing else except a flying v. |

Sorry mate, not completely true. I know for a fact that the ZW 44 Zakk OD is built to his spec and he uses both the OD and ZW45 Wah live and in the studio. From what i have read, Dime also used his signature pedal into his randall SS heads, although not sure whether this was the case with the Krank stuff. |

^^^ i wasnt saying that they dont use their own pedals.. what i was saying is that if Joe Shmoe off the street went into a store and bought the MXR Dimebag distortion, it may or may not make him sound like Dimebag. one funny fact is that Dime NEVER used his Dimebucker pickup live or in studio. he used a Bill Lawrence XL 500 which looks very similar to the dimubuker. another funny fact is that i was currently listening to Pantera when reading this post. about the Krank stuff.. unfortunately he was shot and killed before he really got a chance to use his Krank tube amp extensively. he only used it for a short period i think.
and Timbo, you are right about the Kill Em All sound. i remember reading years ago that James and Dave(who was in the band at the time) had their Marshalls hotrodded by someone in the Bay Area. i didnt know they used pedals though. nice! |

If you have a high gain amp, I would try an SD-1 or DS-1. If your amp is lower gain I'd go for the ML-2. |

Those were modded by Jose Arrendondo, Kirk was about to do the same with an old SLP head, but Jose died just before he could get started. btw, Kirk used a DS-1 on KEA and live to boost his leads, his amp was a single channel JCM-800 2203, James' was an old SLP, that got stolen in Boston and replaced with a similar model in Denmark to be modded later when they got back to the states.
As for a good Metal(lica) sound I'd say get a nice tube amp rather than a pedal. Also Celestion Vintage 30 speakers make a difference in beefier sound, as do a heavier set of strings. (10s minimum, preferably 11s).
Off course they use all kinds of pedals to color their sound, a wah, a Digitech whammy, chorus, delay, you name it. |

This site drops a few facts: http://www.amptone.com/g153.htm
Such as that Kirk saying he used a TS-9 (incase there was any question of which Tubescreamer he used, I know I was wondering if it was an 808 or not)
And that page also has the quote:
Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal: "Jerry Garcia used one and if you crank the high "Color Mix" knob you can get a pretty good Jerry fuzztone" -- Rex Jackson |

Well guys, it's a non-Boss pedal but to play Metallica songs I step in my Digitech Death Metal, it get great EQ shapes specially on mids. Before I got the DDM, the MT-2 was my choice, but I don't got good results with it...
Thanks for the tips about the Tube Screamer ! It's one of my next targets on eBay, togheter with an SD-1 or OD-2.
See ya
