I bought one years ago and it's sitting in my pile of unused pedals - it just seems "harsh"? (like a DS-1 gone wrong) Actually, it's not a million miles away from my DS-2? Is that the experience everyone has had, or is it just mine?

THe PW-2 page says "The PW-2 is predicted to be the next big collectors item. It was only produced during a 9 month period and didn't sell very well".

Hmmmm... Worth keeping? Worth modding?

hehe,

mine sounds closest to my metal zone but the bass thump makes it almost unusable for my 2x12's and humbucker guitars.

from the samples i'd heard before i got mine, this thing needs to be screaming loud.

That's why I bought mine. It sits in the cabinet, in the stack of overdrives and distortions that I hardly use, now that I have a tube amp.

p4pv:

so can you verify if it does indeed scream through solid state or is it still kinda bogus?

i don't own any solid state amps and haven't had a chance to demo it loud through one.

I also bought PW-2 for the collection, tried it, didnt like it, right into the archive.
Then someone mentioned it on this forum, someone who did like it, and I gave it a second chance. Now I could find a use for it, it had a sound in the direction of a Big Muff. And I learned how to use the tone controls, this is important.
I like PW-2 now, not the best distortion-maker from Boss, but its useful in some situations/some sounds.

i'll second the big muff comparison, especially at lower volumes...

however, i kept reading stuff about screaming marshall stack... i can tell it's voiced in that vain, just not able to pull it off through an actual marshall so i'm curious what the buzz is about.

i know the guitarist in U2 (i refuse to call him by his "name" because i think it's stupid and was most likely a self-created nickname) but i've never considered him much of a guitar icon... except for maybe how to stack 9 layers of reverb and delay.

off topic but brings up memories of one of my favorite guitar gags of all time (warning, link has profanity, but in a good way): http://www.theonion.com/content/node/34676

Id don't like my PW-2 for stand alone drive but when I combine it with my OD-1/2/3 it gave me great control and the thing sounded very good!
I've placed the PW-2 after the OD's. I might try it the other way some time to see how that works out.
So first I didn't like it, but together with another drive pedal, I had to change my opinion.

I actually got it from a local shop who had it old new stock (I do't think they knew it was rare), tried it out (with a LP through a tube amp), but did't like it, so I returned it. I remember I liked the colour, though

My criterion is still that I have to want to play through a pedal, becase it sounds GOOD. So I never buy them just because they're rare (it could be part of the reason, that's why I own both a DM2 and 3). Of course, not all the pedals I own are on my pedalboard, but could be. That's why I'm selling my recently acquired XT-2: rare, but sounds

I agree that the PW sounded kinda like a faux DS-1, which I also sold (to a friend), having a TS9, Vintage RAT and a big muff

Thanks for the opinions folks! Glad I'm not the only one who thought it sounded like poo!

I'll give it another chance... I recall that when i bought it 3 years ago it sounded "very heavy", but now it just sounds whiney, so I'll pull the back off and check the capacitors etc as well. Maybe it sounded good through my old combo (cant recall if I had the marshall when I was trying it back then) - I'll try it with the combo again too.

I love that pedal.

It has a big muff distortion /fuzz tone on the thick strings, and a real nice tube style overdrive on the lighter strings. Therefore you can get some nice sludgey type chords, while being able to play really nice leads. Just like the XT-2, there is a lot of variation in the two middle knobs.

it should be heavy. buzzy at low volumes like a metal zone is at low volumes. need to crank it to get it to "open up" a bit harmonically.

I guess Gizzorge and I are in the minority - I really liked it and only replaced it with boutique pedals.
Mr. Arkadin, I could be persuaded to part with it now...

It just doesn't sound like that to me. It doesn't sound like my MT-2 either - at any setting. I will definitely take the back of to check for dry capacitors etc over the weekend. I'll also try it completely cranked and see (particularly how it sounds on my combo).
