hi guys! couldn't help but notice in the last posts that you recommended buying an iron an a desoldering braid. i've always used the desoldering pump and have never used/seen the braid. does it do a better/easier job?

there's advantages to both imo.

pump = when there's a big glob of solder and you want to take a lot of it off at once. this might take a very long time with braid.

braid = cleans up joints better.

the big advantage to braid is that it will start to work without having to heat up the entire glob of solder on the joint like a pump does.

i have 2 pumps, one is a squeezer, the other has some spring loaded piston type of thing. the piston one works the best but also has a nasty habit of jarring the area you are working on with its recoil which can cause the iron to scratch the board in spots.

i'm better w/ pumps but i find braid to do a much cleaner job.

That's the manly way to think. Any problem can be used as an excuse to buy some tools. My girlfriend doesn't seem to understand this

and the Electronic soldering starter kit with braid, electronic grade solder and stuff like that.

All in all 60

let's see how it works....

Hi MullyFX

Looks pretty good.
You will be able to work on lots of other stuff with that unit.
Although I couldn't see the size of the tip, that is installed.

Keep the sponge damp, not flooded & soaking wet.

Just use a small soldering iron tip if you have one.

And don't apply too much heat to the older Phenolic - Bakelite PCB's
the tracks can lift off.

If you take your time, you should be ok.

Post some pics of the cleaned up & resoldered area.

And thumbs up for having a go at something new.

Regards Dr. Bob

it just came with a very narrow tip since it's specifically for electronics... it can go from 150 degrees (celsius that is) to 400

the solder I got (supposedly flux filled - whatever that is) is supposed to - do you say melt when it comes to soldering? - at 183 degrees Celsius. so the unit set too 200 should do the job.

I'm excited...

just going out for a cigarette and will get right to it.. so stay tuned for some pictures...

I'll post some of the clean track before doing anything else

Flux filled means that the solder has a cleaning agent right inside it to clean the metal to allow the solder to bond. It's completely standard.

"Melt" is the right term. And 200 degrees should be fine. If it is too slow to melt, just wind the temperature up a small amount.

To use the braid, hold the braid on the solder you want to remove, then put the iron on the braid (so the braid is sandwiched between the solder to remove and the soldering iron). You will see the braid sucking up the solder - lift off the iron and braid before the board gets too hot. Maybe you will have to do that a couple of times with fresh sections of braid to remove it all.

Before you put too much heat to it to fix any problems you have you may want to buy a clamp on heat sink. These are like spring loaded clamps that you clip to the PCB near where you are soldering and it will conduct the heat into the clamp and not into the PCB itself or nearby components. They can't cost more than a dollar or two (or a Euro or so).

NO PROBLEM!!

Just heat it up again while gently pulling on the braid. It will come away.
