I really like mine, MIJ, not a real thick sound, but useable.

In my opinion it has the best tone controls ever found on a Boss pedal. As a matter of fact I think it is so good that I nicked the design for an amp I'm building

I agree with bossarea. The tone controls are great on this one.

I like the sound of HM-2 but the drive/dist knob is a bit strange, between about 9-15 oclock there is no raising of the distorsion, on mine.Anyone else noticed this?

I felt like bringing this thread back from the dead, cause I got my hands on the above mentioned HM-2 and had to express my opinion about it. Oh, yeah, it was a black-labeled MIT.

To put it this way, I disliked the pedal and returned it the next day.
The sound was too grainy and fuzzy for my taste.

The tone controls are very good, as boss freak and bossarea mentioned, and dist knob did act wierd (1-2 crunch, 2-8 distorted, 8-10 same as 2-8 but with a bit more noise).

Don't get me wrong, this pedal IS good, if you have lots of free time to tweak it and if you like the sound it delivers. I just don't.

cheers!

I've also found that the HM-2 sounds inversly proportional to the quality of the amp
Use the HM-2 with a quality amp and it will ruin the sound of the amp. Use it with a small solid state practise amp and it really kicks it to life.

It does tend to have that effect, but I have a modded version that sounds good with all the amps I've tried it on. Sometimes it's nice to have something like this if you have a good-sounding amp that doesn't have channel-switching abilities. It all depends on what you're going for of course.

Yeah I got one too...damn I was surprised. It's basically a fuzz pedal :\

Sounded okish being boosted by an SD-1 into my solid state amp, but I don't really see any use for it. I was really hoping to get "Marshall" in a box, but the DS-1 seems to do that so much better.

I agree that the DS-1 does sound like a Marshall in a box (I'm think modded plexi sound) no wonder they won't quit making them.
