SSIA; I've got a broken shaft on the right-hand potentiometer on my PH-3. It's the "Stage" pot that switches between "4, 8, 10, 12, fall, rise, step" settings. It is severed slightly above the level where the hex nut secures the threaded part of the shaft to the box. So one can manage to switch it with a small screwdriver, but it isn't easy.
Is there any way to weld another shaft on this, or if I need to replace the pot, where can I obtain a similar one?
Ideas are welcome and thanks in advance. |

G'day! Sadly, there is no real way to fix this. The only option is to buy the pot off Roland and desolder the old one then solder the new one in.
You can probably "bodge" something up using a standard pot from Small Bear (their 9mm ones will fit), but it will lack the "detents".
If you call Roland USA and talk to the parts guys, they should send you the part no problem. Expect it to be something around $10 plus shipping. They can also sell you a knob (if that's also gone), plus other spares... I usually buy some base screws, some spare jacks, etc. when I order parts from Roland so that the shipping doesn't bite so hard for just one part.

Hi Disco Stu, Laurie & guys
From the pictures, it looks like a 50K lin. pot. Must be connected to some A-to-D converter, I would have assumed it was a 6-7 way mini rotary switch. (I don't own a PH-3 yet)
2/3rds of the way down the page (thanks to Mesjoggah) http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4147&whichpage=11

Yep - is a 50k lin pot, but it has detents for each selection point.
This one: http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=693 (select "50k linear") will fit, and it will work, but without the detents I think it would be a pain in the bum to use...?
NOTE: the shafts on the 9mm SmallBear pots (the ones referenced above) are slightly too large for the Boss knobs to fit, plus they do not have a "flat". When I've used the SmallBear ones, I've had to very carefully grind down the shaft and grind a flat onto it. Not impossible, but not pleasant and hard to get right.
All that being said, I go back to my suggestion that the best option is an orignal spare part from Roland - knob will fit, and it will have the detents.
Here is a shot of mine. It's hard to see on the uploaded pic, but on my original high-res pic, the pot nearest the 2 jacks (the one that's broken on Disco Stu's PH-3) definitely says B50K.

Thanks for all of the advice. You folks are all techno geniuses. And I mean that in a good way.
So I guess I will have to search out the toll free number for Boss parts division, unless someone here has it handy?
Thank you all again and have a safe, fun New Year's Eve!! I'm off to restring my D-28 factory reject... |
