I curently have a MD-2 (Dist) and Od-3 (OD) and wondering what Boss distortion comes in between these to. I was thinking Ds-2 or Bd-2 mabye Any ideas?
Is the BD-2 overdrive or Distortion?
thanks
EDIT: Anybody had experiences with the digitech bad mokey? |

Looking at the distortion chart in the boss book, the od3 is in the natural/smooth corner and opposite is the md2 in the rough/metallic corner. Opposite of each other. Looks like its either a ds1 or an os2 is in the middle. Not the best options i guess, but both 'dual' pedals. What sound are you looking for? hm2/3, xt2, mz2, fz2/3, mt2, pw2.....
The bd2 is an overdrive and opinions vary with some people liking the stock icy tone. Its also in the same corner as the od3. |

If you are game to try a mod... I'm seriously happy with my MT-2 Stormchaser - it hasn't left my board since I finalised the design.

It's kind of halfway between a DS-1 and an MT-2 and has a nice MOSFET sound. If you wanted to do the mod I could package up the parts and send them for a "nominal cost".
Alternatively, the DS-1 with the Keeley "ultra" mod is awesome too.

The BD-2 is an OD. I don't like the way it sounds with the gain control dimed, though.
The Bad Monkey is like a Tube Screamer, except that the BM has an active 2-band EQ. It doesn't have a lot of gain on tap. You might be able to find a DOD FX51 Juice Box, which was the earlier version of the BM.

The turbo mode is heavily mid boosted. It sounds a lot like the DOD Grunge Pedal, but the DS-2 sounds much better. The DS-2 is definitely less metallic than the MD-2.

Hi Ollie
I gather from your now edited post, that it doesn't have to be a Boss Pedal?
Give the Marshall Gov'nr 2 a try.
I played mine at an impromptu get-together & after work jam, & I'm pretty sure I could have sold (2) of them then & there on the spot.
I can't remember if anyone has already asked you, or if you have already told us. What amp & what speaker size are you running your pedals into? It make a big difference.
The Bad Monkey is basically a really nice sounding TubeScreamer. With bass & treble boost-cut controls.
The the tone control on the original TubeScreamer, is just a treble cut control.
If you try the Gov'nr 2 - Set the DEEP control to off. - find a setting you like, them slowly bring in the DEEP control, it will amaze you how much chug-a-chug bottom end, this pedal can & control can produce.
It is supposed to progressively add the character & tone of a Marshall 4x12 cabinet. It works. But maxed out it can be too boom-y, depending on your amp/rig.
Regards Dr. Bob |

the OD-3 and MD-2 are nearly on opposite ends of the spectrum, with the OD-3 being on the low gain side and MD-2 being on the high gain side.
the BD-2 is probably the only boss pedal with LESS gain than the OD-3, so you can pretty much write that off.
the MD-2 has 2 current production pedals with more gain (and maybe 2-3 out of production pedals), so that leaves quite a gap between the MD-2 and OD-3.
i'm not a fan of the DS-2's turbo mode. it's very harsh without adding much in the nuttage department. the non-turbo mode basically lumps it in with the DS-1's gain flavor, but the DS-2's coloring sounds more like the original op amp DS-1 than the current DS-1.
is there an amp sound or tone you are looking for?

| I'd recommend you a DS-1... it's a great pedal! In my rig, the Keeley modded DS-1 sounds even better... some may prefer a DS-1, but I think it's just what you need... |

That's a quite heavy distortion in my opinion. I used mine with the sustain set at about 8 o'clock, but it is quite cheap. |
