So if you are interested, post an offer here or email me. I have to go look at it, but as I recall it's in perfect shape and sounds just like it is supposed to.
Going on ePay soon.

While doing a bit more research on a song by Mr.Mister with a great distortion sound i heard on the radio,i came across a forum where one of the guys said he worked with a lot of the L.A. session guys back in the 80's and the guitar player out of Mr.Mister used a HM-2 going into a Dumble amp.... ...the guy had a dumble ODS and was using the HM-2.. ...says it all really, this is more of a classic rock pedal than a heavy metal distortion with that stupid,no midrange in the sound... i've been impressed with the bottom end and the amount of boost the HM-2 has...way louder than any of my other boss dist/fuzz/drives....it's on the board for the weekend alongside my TwinTube overdrive which is my main lead sound.... bank holiday weekend here,so three gigs fri/sat/sun and acoustic session on monday..i'll report back how the HM-2 fares out live... |

I won a MIJ on eBay this week... should arrive any day now, can't wait!
This video gives you a good idea of the HM-2 sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SfL6sCYDPU
I researched quite a bit before going ahead with the purchase, as I've never known much about the seemingly diverse range of Boss "metal" pedals... and it seems to me that this is the good one. Curiously, something that popped-up in my research a lot was that it is *the* pedal for attaining a certain Swedish death metal sound, bands like Entombed (?). I have no experience with this kind of music, and I can't say it really appeals to me, but it would seem that this fact alone might make this pedal quite collectable, if not now then in the future. Someone said that fans of that music are just stockpiling HM-2s like crazy (in some case owning up to 20 or more) as there is no other way to get that particular sound, and apparently you need to have every knob at maximum and into a barely dirty tube amp. Oh, and as usual its the MIJ that has the "mojo". :) |

What a coincidence, I just got my second HM-2 yesterday in the mail, $30 shipped. It's a bit beat and no box, but I have an unused box from a previous HM-2 that I owned and later sold. I think the new one is the fourth one I've owned over all. Just have two now, both MIJ. |

HI Franz,
HM2 can give you sound of JMP Marshall, that is 70s distortion!! Just be careful with controls, from there you can go into 80s metalsound of dist.
The thing with so many of the bossoverdrives is that many of them will cover similar flavours but some may be more specific than others with the result that you will find your sound quicker. |

Well ... i enjoyed the HM-2 but it couldn't live with the hoodlum that is the SD TwinTube classic.... there is just something out of a real valve overdrive that does something for me... so the HM-2 will join the rest of my unused boss collection once again....if i'm going to look for another distortion or booster i might look at the Blackstar stuff..... |

Thanks for the live-set update on the HM-2.
=== Propeller Hats (on) Tech Theory Up Ahead Warning ===
There's nothing that will compete with the the tone & dynamics of, a tube with 120V to 300V on it's plate's. Even in partially starved plate mode the 12A_7 series of valves can sound very good.
I am currently playing with partial starved pates on a 12AX7 in the 30V range, & still getting interesting & toneful results.
A 12AU7 will run with as low as 6-9VDC on it's plates, if you pre-drive the grid, with a higher level signal, similar to what is done on some pedals from certain big name manufactures. The 12AX7 really farts out (literally) in this mode, if you're not careful. (If the signal on grid goes more positive than the plate, it acts more like a rectifier, hence the farting sound)
I have an EHX English Muff'n (NOS) never used, it runs around 230V-300V into the plate resistors. But I have been unable to get a usable or decent tone out of it.
I'm about to pull it apart to see if it has a manufacturing fault - or is just not worth bothering with. I have heard the video/audio demos of the EHX English Muff'n, but have never been able to reproduce any of the tones in the video. === Propeller Hats Off ===
I guess I might sell it off, & look for a Twin Tube or one of the Blackstar's, like Franzoni mentioned above.
There is a local distributor for Blackstar gear just a few Km's down the road.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Sorry to highjack the thread, but I remember you baiting me to get a real valve pedal. After I bought the Blackstar HT-5 amp, I couldn;t help myself when an HT-Drive turned up on eBay. Awesome pedal... |

I know were all going a bit OT here..and i do like the HM-2 and it will remain part of my gearlist,i was impressed with the output and the bottom end of the HM-2 compared to my other boss dirt pedals...i wasn't looking for something to replace my TT just something to go with it for a bit more sonic mayhem... but the valve thing whatever magic those little glass tubes have has got me bad... ...i'm thinking of the Blackstar HT-Booster instead on my CS-3 as a clean booster down the road,i'm getting a bit bored with compression and valves make their own natural compression when they start to be pushed..only thing about those Blackstar pedals, their pretty big and will take up a good bit of real estate on the 'board plus like my SD twintube they need their own power supply..i would have to build a new board to fit it in......... |

So the HM-2 is a nice sound from what I've heard on youtube...but the pedals seem pricy on ebay. Is there a contemporary (eg. in stores) BOSS pedal that gets close to the HM-2 sound? I don't need the HM-2 sounds EXACTLY (you don't miss what you've never had...), but if one of the newer pedals makes a good substitute and comes close, which one would it be?
Thanks, Scott

Ahh the HM2, I love it to death. Its my main distortion all the time.
Latley I've been using my mij SD1 to boost it when im using my telecaster. Sounds really nice.
For some reason I still prefer the MIT version, I had both on my board for awhile and I had to take the mij off!
Oh well, comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. Cheers |

OK, I just got an HM-2 off of ebay, and having played around with it for five to ten minutes, I know now why they are coveted. When I hit that first power chord, I thought to myself - I've heard this sound before! I bet tons of records have been made with the help of this pedal.
First impression - definitely a classic, versatile distortion sound. In fact, its good (and generic, in its own way) enough to use for a lot of stuff I think. |
