My gut response would be to just blurt out, "Because Chorus Sucks," but that's not really fair.
My two cents & two reasons:
1) Most people use Chorus as a crutch in place of good tone. They can't adjust the waveforms to get a good tone, and it takes over the whole signal making it a sloppy mess.
2) The only people who use chorus properly aren't thought of as "Chorus Only" users. Andy Summers (of course) is the best example. I mean, everyone knows he USED Chorus, but you didn't think of his chorus pedal every time you heard the first few notes of "Roxanne" "Every Breath You Take" or "Do Do Do De Da Da Da"... you heard his guitar and songwriting skill. Stone Temple Pilots also used tons of really thick chorus on "Core" and "Purple" but it was used so tastefully you didn't think of it that way.
In other words, it needs to subtle.

| well put diggum. its true that a lot of "clean" guitarists hide behind chorus a lot. |

i'm not too fond of mono chorus sounds i actully stopped using my ch1 years ago for a while because i wasn't to mad about the sound with one amp,but since i got the second amp up and running i use it in stereo last in the chain and when i mix in a bit of ph2 or bf2 with some delay and compression i can get a really big fat sound.... but i agree with a lot of the other posters you don't have to use it all the time or it becomes boring...... |

What I meant was: I listen with my EARS instead of my EYES.
Nah I understand that, Billy Corgan dressed like a total stool, but I like the Smashing Pumpkins a lot. |

I absolutely agree with you on that one. Nuff said.
As for chorus, my favorite pedal is the CE-2b for both bass and guitar. I loved the way Duff McKagan used chorus on his bass sound back with Guns n Roses. |

Now there you go, Dick. Duff was a good example of good Chorus. But I always wondered if he was using the chorus built into his GK head.
GK had really good built-in Chorus on their amps in the 70's & 80's, but again, only used in moderation was it pleasing... |

Nope, Duff still used a Yamaha spx-90 multi-fx solely for chorus although it can do a million other things, in fact he still uses the same old unit he got back in '89 or so.
As for amps, he used 800rb's in the Guns days, and recently with VR he switched to 2001rb's. Both heads don't have built in chorus, some of the older pre 800rb models did. |

Thanks for the info Dirk! Sorry, I mistakenly called you Dick earlier...
I always thought the bass intro to "You Could Be Mine" was good! |

It was awesome! Great song too. Again great use of a subtle chorus to thicken the sound, just like The Garden, November Rain, coma, Pretty tied up and Could it be U from his first solo album, among others. Live he would often use a less subtle chorus, listen to his bass solo on the Live Tokyo DVD for a great example of heavy chorus (ab)use |
