It probably seems like heresy to discuss this on Bossarea, but has anyone got suggestions for suitable affordable alternatives to classic (i.e. discontinued) Boss pedals?
By suitable, I don't mean Behringer clones - I know they seem to produce a version of just about every Boss compact ever made, but to me they are not in the same league: For one, the flimsy plastic shell and awkward side-mounted power jack has put me right off them. I'm looking for decent build quality (i.e. metal case) and a buffered bypass as good as Boss.
I'll start us off with:
DD-5 alternative: I searched for ages for a second hand DD-5 (i've got a DD-20, but wanted a second delay with a tap tempo jack), before settling for a Marshall Echohead: http://marshallamps.com/product.asp?productCode=EH-1 - Similar options, time range etc to the DD-5, metal case, tap tempo jack, and the bonus features of analog and tape modes that are missing from the DD-5.
OC-2 alternative: I've been on the look-out, and few manufacturers seem to do a decent sub-octaver. The OC-2 is not that hard to come by second hand, but I got sick of waiting and managed to score an Onerr "Nickel Octave": http://filters.muziq.be/model/onerr/no1 It hasn't arrived yet (i'll post a review when it arrives), but it seems to be a direct clone but in a decent metal shell, and cost me only $22ish.
In fact, Onerr do a quite decent looking range of well-built compacts, many "inspired" by Boss pedals - I tried out the Autowah/envelope filter and found it to be quite good: A bit like the FT-2 but without an expression jack. They also do a "boosted line selector", which is effectively a single loop version of the LS-2, but with a tone pot in addition to the volume control.
Anyone got any other suggestions for new, well made pedals to look out for?

Rockson Pedals,
especially the chorus, sounds like a CE2.

The danelectro cool cat series has some excellent offerings based mostly on boutique designs but at very cheap/resonable prices and good quality. I got the two pedal below and they sound very nice.
C01 drive = OCD clone CT01 Transparent Overdrive = Timmy clone
I have ordered the their vibe and tremolo pedals too. |

I wonder if you could put the guts of a Behringer inside an old Boss case just for the durability factor |

UPDATE:
Just received my Onerr NO-1 Nickel Octave pedal -

It sounds exactly like my old OC-2, haven't had a chance to look at the internals yet, I will get round to it soon. Build quality seems good, switch mechanism very similar to Boss style. One big plus is the position of the in/output jack sockets - They are placed much higher than on most normal pedals (Boss included), meaning that when placed between two other normal pedals, the right angle jacks fall under the Onerr's jacks, saving some precious pedalboard space (Digitech pedals like my Bad Monkey have much lower jack sockets, also saving space).
It cost me $22 on eBay (though sticker on the back states a very optimistic list price of $139), which even with the exorbitant shipping from the US to the UK, and the weak sterling, worked out as a bargain... Recommended.

Hi Leeroyfunk
Nice Onerr NO-1 Nickel Octave pedal.
When you do look inside, please post some pictures of it, in out internals thread.
Can I also ask for some internal pics of the DOD 280 compressor? I have heard good things about that little box.
Onerr make a really nice wah, called the "Fat Boy" They have a web site as well, there are some good audio demos.
http://www.onerr.com/eng/home.asp For the English version site.
Or just http://www.onerr.com
They seem to have a new multi-effects pedal, called the GEP1000, that looks kind of cool.
Regards Dr. Bob |
