Hi all
Some of you might have seen in some of my posts about my desire to build a wet/dry/wet system for my rig... i'm trying to kill two birds with one stone ala Larry Carlton and Eric Johnson who use a couple of small, active PA cabs as for the effects and doubles as their acoustic guitar amp.......obviously i don't need as much power as those guys so i have my eye of a couple of cabs, one comes with 8" woofer and the other a 10"...my main concern is portability and taking up too much stage space on the backline(on the electric gigs i would have one of my amps)but still want a decent quality.... both have the same power rating 80 watts on the woofer and 50 watts on the horn ..the 8" is 0nly 227 mm wide so this is a big plus but would the slightly bigger 10" be better soundwise..?...i notice a lot of acoustic amps only use 8" speakers in them....also when we have mixed the acoustic/electric stuff on one gig i've missed the acoustic/mandolin coming out of an amp behind me like my strat... seems to get a bit 'lost' in the mix sometimes as we don't have a soundman to tweek and in a live gig situation this can sometimes be not an option.....
sorry 'bout the esay.... as always all comments/advice greatly appreciated........
P.S miking the amp to a mic pre and a line signal out to my rack for the electric stuff....... |

Quick update.... looking at the specs again i think i might go for the 10"s...very little in the physical size and weight and i'm thinking the slightly bigger speaker will be better for the spread.....roll on the end of the month.... ...let the G.A.S. begin...... ....... |

Hi FRANZONI
Can I ask what pickups you have in in your acoustic. Type - Brand - Model? I seem to remember you purchased a new one last year, at some run out sale. But I couldn't find the link to the pics.
When I play at the folk club, I run the Fender Acoustic - with a Fishman Classic 4T Piezo system into their: DI - boxes. 16 way Expansion Snake - back to the desk. And from the desk onto a pair of 12 inch Front of house, can't rem. the brand. I'll go look at some old pics.
The desk & most of the other gear is all Behringer, as they are a non profit club.
The Guy that runs the desk is very pro, & really knows his stuff. And he does ride the mix all night, & gets a brilliant sound.
I don't use any effects or outboard gear, but I will be introducing one of my compressors into the mix, just to even things out a bit.
The guy on the desk usually routes me through one of their on-board - out-board compressors.
Just watch the amount of foldback, I find that it can throw your playing off a bit, if the EQ is off in the monitors.
You might need to buy one of those cheap sound hole blockers, it lets you get the levels a bit higher, & stops the sudden Howl (feedback), when some note/s, hit the resonant point of your acoustics body cavity.
I carry one just in case, but have not had to use it so far. The Fishman Classic 4T has been a blessing in disguise, in more ways than one. I am about to experiment with a new system that has a small mic that can be adjusted into the mix.
Those of you guys that know the Maton guitar company, you will know of the APmic preamp, (an AP5 with additional mic), expensive but promising, with a sweepable mid freq. 1k to 2K.
On my older non-pickup guitars, I use the Deam Markley Woody magnetic sound hole pickup, that I told you about before. Cheap & kicks butt, great for acoustic blues, on those pretend unlplugged - small low wattage gigs.
PM me if you feel you need to.
Apologies if this was a bit off topic, you were asking about amp gear.
Regards Dr. Bob

Howdy Doc
I had been using a homemade soundhole pickup i made myself out of an old tele neck pickup and a feedback(soundhole)buster but it was ok in a sort of early 40's blues sound not really for what i need my acoustic sound to be....so i've ordered these for my 6 and 12 string guitars as they didn't come with any built in systems...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140340767923&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
i ordered two..a bit of surgery required but for the price i think it's worth it..i had planned on a couple of fishman rare earths or baggs M1 active but couldn't really justify dropping nearly 450 for two of them,as we only do a few acoustic gigs....
http://www.thomann.de/ie/the_box_pa110a.htm
i pln on getting two of these as my 'wet cabs' for my rig the plan is to use them in conjunction with my amp, basically mic the amp through a mic pre and the line level signal to my rack splitting to stereo out through the full range speakers ..the beauty of this as i see it,is because they are full range speakers i will be able to use them also for the acoustic stuff as my backline via the mic pre/rack......in case anyones interested i will be sending three lines to the desk..one from the mic pre(dry)in the middle and the cabs have a XLR line out i can send and pan LEFT/RIGHT for max stereo spread.....
P.S.....as i know DeFrag in into some of this stuff i'm looking at this as my mic pre...reviews for it seem pretty decent for what it costs.....

looks good....i like the fact you can buy a rack adapter and rack it with the rest of the stuff......
i'd love to be getting a chandler tube pre or the avalon and a couple of JBL Eon 10"s like carlton/landau etc.... but unfortunately it's coming close to the start of the school term and books and uniforms etc are top of Mrs F's list at the moment... ..plus i haven't quite explained the second part of the plan for my new rig to Mrs F yet either.... ...i reckon i'll have to sneak some of this in under the radar..... plus this is all for the live enviroment so really top end stuff would be wasted in some of the places we play.....mostly doing this as an experiment for myself more than anything else.......cheers guys..... |

Went with,or as DeFrag puts it "i pulled the trigger" on a SM proaudio TB 202 tube mic pre with two channels(good Aussie brand) and a thomann own brand 1 rack stereo power amp in the end..i'm going to build my own 1x12 cabs for the celestion V-30's i have in my spare room in storage...we have a spare 150 watt PA cab in our rehearsal room we don't use so i can use that as a refererence monitor on the acoustic stuff(full range speaker) and the 1x12's in a wet/dry/wet setup on the electric stuff with one of my amps..a bit more to cart around and setup but from what i've seen/heard,it can really fill out the sound....from what i could find on the web most players tend to go towards the guitar speakers over active PA speakers for the electric stuff except for larry carlton..the power amp for me anyway is probably the best as i can use the rack for both type of gigs now.... ...i'll take some pics of the cab building if anyone is interested..i did woodwork in school many moons ago and built bigger projects but it's been a while since i've attempted anything like this.... .....should be fun....

Hey Franzoni, when you bring all that stuff along on a stage, I bet your bassplayer and drummer would want their own PA too, huh? |

....believe it or not dirk this will actually make my rig more compact.... or at least thats what i tell myself.... the main idea is to give me a bit more flexibility to switch sounds in and out...we don't have keys in the band and our singers guitar playing abilities are limited so i can have my leslie unit running in parallel with my main amp sound....can't claim this idea for my own ..i nicked it from Gilmour... i suppose if your gonna 'borrow'....borrow from the best....... |

I totally understand why you do it, I was only joking
I love how Peter Frampton has his leslie running parallel to his guitar sound, as if there's an organ playing along. He also uses a wet/dry/wet setup AND a real leslie. I guess it's nice to have roadies |

Frampton as well...? didn't know that..cool,yep sure would be nice to have roadies but then this is a bit more lightweight than a real leslie,as even though we have a large Ford Transit van we drag all the gear in and out of the venues ourselves including a 2K rig.. dragging a real leslie cab would be like dragging your grannys wardrobe to a gig... ....i'm really looking forward to getting this up and running....the fact i can just swap a cab from a guitar speaker to a small PA cab and use it for the acoustics(even if it's only mono on the acoustic stuff) as well is a plus....i got the fishman aero+ preamps and pickups this morning so my first step is to install them in the 6&12 string waldens.... |
