What kind of effect will have if I use 1N34a on D4 and/or D5?

Everyone has been talked about use 1N4148 an 1N4001...but ... What Happen if I use Germaniun Diodes??? (1N34a) is it really affects the sound...? Will it give a tube amp sound?

I use two 1N34A's in my homemade dist+ and I like it. You get more distortion and sustain but also less output too. A booster after the distortion usually helps.

cctsim ... Do you use two 1N34 connected in series?

If I have less output ... May I change R13 to 1K ( and C8 to 1Uf) to increase gain and compensate that kind of low output??

What do you think???

No, they are connected similar to D4 and D5 in DS-1.

R13 and C8 control the pre-clipping gain. The result will be more fuzz but not more output level.

The problem is that the 1N34A starts clipping at 0.3 V which restricts the output level significantly.

If you use 2 1N34As in series will definitely give you more output but no more than stock. However, the texture of the distortion will be different, not necessarily better as sound is bit subjective.

So, Can be a good idea to use ....

D4 = 1N34a + 1N34a = 0.3v+0.3v = 0.6V
D5 = 1N34a + 1N34a = 0.3v+0.3v = 0.6V... ?

And What will happen if I make...?

D4 = 1N34a + 1N34a + 1N4148 = 0.3v+0.3v+0.6 = 1.2V
D5 = 1N34a + 1N34a + 1N4004 = 0.3v+0.3v+0.6 = 1.2V ....???

Is it will help to increase volume and sound like Tube ??

Im seeking to make a JCM/Tube hybrid sound... ( is it possible??)

Im planning to make this changes:

C3 = 0.033uf( or 0.1 uF??)
R13 = 1K
R17 = 15K
C2,C5,C8,C9 = 1uF.
D4 = 1N4148 connected in series with two 1N34a.
D5 = 1N4004 connected in series with two 1N34a.( or LED, for asymetrical clipping?? What do U think?)

I Asking because I dont wanna broke this pedal with my daredevil asumptions....

The best way to avoid wrecking the pcb is to build a separate prototyping perfboard that has the clipping diodes and use two wires from the main board to connect from D4 and D5.

If you decide you don't like the sound you can play with different configurations without having to worry about any damage.

Just make the wires long enough depending on how much you want to experiment.

I would try something asymmetric:

D4 = 1N34a + 1N400x + 1N4148
D5 = 1N34a + 1N400x

Or even use mosfets either in the body diode mode or as soft clipper.
