Hi peebo

Well if it doesn't work I'll cry with you.

I've designed & built many power supplies with the LMxxxx series of regulators.
And they always work, if they don't well you built it incorrectly.

The LM317T has better than 110dB of hum & noise rejection.

Regards Dr. Bob

well looks like we'll have a crying party

it did work, and i had a nice 9v coming out of it
plugged in my 4 pedals (3 boss, one ibanez, and ignored the zoom for now) and they all powered up and no big hum like before!!!

i'm excited!!

until i crank the amp up and what's that? a hum? i plug my guitar direct into my amp and it's silent. I do as i did before and take out all but 2 pedals and it's silent

so it's reduced the hum, but hasn't got rid of it.

it's late now so I wont be checking it until tomorrow, but with only 9 parts it's pretty hard to build it wrong ;)

Hi peebo

What are the pedals?
Can you lest them?

Assuming you bit the regulator correctly. (send pics).
It sounds like you actually have some other possible fault in one of the pedals

Or one of the earth-(shields) on one of your jumper/patch cables is faulty-damaged.
It does happen, and some cheap leads have so little shielding, that they are not worth buying.

Or you have one MEGA Crap noisy or inductive plug pack.

As I stated, the LMxxxx series of regulators have better than 110dB of hum & noise suppression.
You basically built a better version of the electronics, that's inside a Boss PSA.

Anyway send some pics, & we'll see if we can help you out.

PS also post a scan or pic of the schematic for the regulator you just built,
in case there is some minor design issue with it.

And tell, or show us, how you wired it into the circuit after the plug pack.

Regards Dr. Bob.

Isn't the 1Spot a switching power supply & thus inherently noisy for use with Boss pedals?

I haven't had a problem with mine (I have 3); perhaps certain types of pedals or older analogs exhibit noise.
What's the true scoop?

pedals are
HM2 - OD2 - CH-1 - Ibanez PT-9

the first one i pulled out was the ibanez, it's an ancient one, but i tried a few combinations of pedals and patch leads

the noise i get now sounds less like that earth hum i had before, and more like the noise you would get if all your pedals were turned on (esp distortions) ;) so chances are it could be a dodgy patch lead or something

i also put my multimeter on the end of the daisy chain with all 4 pedals turned on, and it was reading 8.8V, and in my opinion that would show the regulator is working. it reads 9.1V with no load

i'll try another adapter tonight and see what happens, and take a few pics too (i'm at work now...)

well gents
turn your frowns upside down

I tried another adaptor, and it's fine!!! repeat FINE!!

the only noise difference now between guitar direct into amp and guitar through 4 pedals is a slight hiss you would expect from having 4 pedals connected.

unfortunately, when I put the Zoom back in the chain the noise comes back, but with that on it's own adapter it's fine, so I'm happy with 2 adapters! someone suggested that I might have to do that anyway, so it's all good. beats having an adapter per unit as I had before ;)

so thanks guys for all your help and suggestions. I will post pics of the work once it's tidied up, for now there's wire everywhere just to get it working and tested ;)

Hi peebo

Good work, sorting it all out,
I wonder what was wrong with the first adapter?

thnx, and for your help too
i think the first adapter was too cheap and too nasty ;)
it was a lower mA rating (300mA) and was outputting 12V unloaded, whereas the one I use now is 500mA and 15V unloaded

I tried the cheaper one first so i could sacrifice the wires to connect it to the PCB.

i'm going to add an LED per Laurie's schematic so I know when it's on, and I also need to get PCB mounts for the jiffy case so it doesnt float around in there. but since Jaycar only sell a box of 25 for $10 i might see if i can scrounge some of a dead bit of gear or my friend who may have a stash ;)
