Does anyone have some thoughts on what type of guitar ultimately gets paired up with P-90 pickups? Was it a Les Paul that was the first guitar to feature them?
Does anyone here use them?
What do you think of them? |

Always a safe bet using them w/ an LP! I don't know if they were the first to feature them, but I'm sure as with much info is out there on Les, it would be easy to find out. They also sound REALLY cool in a LP Double Cutaway or LP Jr.
I had them on a LP Jr (old early 70's) and let it get away. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. |

The P-90 was developed after World War II and was used to replace the "Bar" pickup on guitars like the E-150. By the end of the 1940's it was the standard pickup on all Gibson guitars including the Les Paul when it came out in 1952. It was the standard pickup until 1957 when Humbuckers were invented and started taking over everything.
Wikipedia has this to say:
Popular guitars that use/have the option of using P-90's are the Gibson SG, Gibson Les Paul, Epiphone Casino, and Fender Telecaster.
Most of what I wrote was from that Wikipedia article here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-90
So in conclusion, It'll be a while before I get a guitar with P-90's because I have all the types of guitars already that featured them (except for the Epiphone Casino, but I already have a great semi-hollow body, plus I heard the Stock P-90's on it are terrible) and they all have other pickups that I am happy with. On the other hand maybe an LP double cutaway would be sweet tits. |

| I believe Gilmour's Brick in the Wall Part II solo is a '56 LP with P-90s recorded direct to the board. They sound pretty good to me. |

Personally I think P90s sound great in a Les Paul or a Junior.
I'm curious about the Seymour Duncan "Fat Cat" pickups too, in case anyone has any experience with them. They are supposedly a P90 in a standard humbucker size for easy retrofitting without modifying the guitar's routing. |

| I've never had a P90 guitar. When I bought my strat a few years back I was very tempted by a Fender Tornado with P90s (At least I think it was a Tornado). It played good and it sounded good but I was on a strat-mission at the time so I put it back on the stand. |

| just for reference the Fender Guitar you are talking about BossArea is probably a Fender Toronado, not a Tornado. Although everyone makes this mistake and they are often listed on Ebay as Tornado's. I have a friend that used to play one of those in his rock band, and man I thought that thing sounded great, but then the pickups (his had humbuckers) kind of started to sink into the guitar, and since none of us knew anything about guitar repair then, he just sold it. It's a shame because now I could have fixed it very easily and quickly. It's funny how time & age can bring clarity to things. |

i have a fender coronado 2 with (i think) a p90 designed by de armond for fender ..its fairly old i had the neck off once and it had a date of feb 67 on it..its a hollow body and the pickups are very weak and its prone to feedback at high volume because of the hollow body but it has a sweet sound and i would never sell it even though i don't gig it any more.. i got it about 20 years ago of a friends brother for 200 and it was my first electric guitar... it looks like a cross between a strat and a es335 i believe it was designed by the guy who designed the rickenbacker guitars.... roger rossinthal or something like that...!!its funny fender renamed a guitar with a similar name.... coronado to toronado..i saw a picture of chris rea recently and he was playing one..must be good... |

For now it looks I'm going to get an Epiphone Les Paul Jr w/P90's.
Guitar Center was having a labor day sale yesterday and I could have gotten one for $70. But all they had was the Ebony model, and I have enough black and also red guitars. So I'm waiting until they get another batch in tomorrow to see if I can get one in Vintage Sunburst. The guitar will require quite a few little upgrades but I think it'll save me some dough in the long run. If I could afford it I would get a Gibson Les Paul Standard DC (Double Cutaway) w/P90's. But those are usually around $1000, and I'm looking to pay no more than like $300 for this guitar. |
